20 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 21, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Eastview's holiday spirit gives back to community By Josh Brazil Gr. 8, Eastview School D uring this special season Eastview students are involved in many colourful and unique traditions. The purpose of which is to give back to our community and support those in need. One of our popular traditions is the Penny Drive. The program involves all classes in the school joining together to bring in coins (mainly pennies). The coins are collected in a jar and there's even an exciting prize given out to the class who donated the most money to the fund. The Penny Drive does in fact make many of our students feel good because they are making this Christmas a very special one for some of our Eastview families. Last year more than 10,000 pennies were donated. The Eastview Home and School Association takes the coins and uses the money to purchase food and presents for families. which otherwise may not be able to. Yep, the Penny Drive is great, but the Mitten Tree is even better. This charitable offer asks students to contribute warm clothing. Brand new mittens, boots, gloves, hats and even jackets are brought into the office and then cleverly placed on our school Christmas MATTRESS LIQUIDATION PRICE CUTS! 15 YR. WTY 20 YR. It's a very stylish and original way to show off and ignite Eastview's spirit. Plus, it's a great visual. What with us being so grateful and fortunate it's a great way to give. But wait, we're not through with donations. Eastview also has a Food Drive. This drive is special because it means the students can help those who may not be able to afford food and need to rely on donations or the Food Bank. Students bring in non-perishable items and place them in brightly decorated boxes in our front foyer. All of this great spirit and thoughtfulness, in the form of food and clothing will be given to the Salvation Army and the Food Bank. These are the folks who show their care and effort every day not just during the holiday season. Finally, on Dec. 11 we had the Holiday Concert. Many of our families came and watched their children on the big stage. The performance featured stylish and exclusive dances, brilliant booming band appearances, and the choir pitched some of their beautiful vocals. The kindergarten students sang reindeer and gingerbread songs. The band played the Hanukkah song and the choirs sang numbers that included, "Peace on Earth." Solos were played, dances were danced, songs were sung, and for all who attended there was much cheer. All performers received an immense ovation and the families gladly appreciated this year's Holiday Concert. That's Eastview for you, though. We have been practicing and working hard to support our December theme of Hope and Optimism. Whether it's a person in need or a parent looking to be entertained, we hope we have demonstrated the spirit of giving. Merry Christmas, Oakville.
