32 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 19, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Canadian Club dinner speaker to discuss Alzheimer's disease Dr. Michelle Gagnon, head of Geriatrics at St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton, will be the dinner speaker at Canadian Club of Halton Peel's Jan. 17 meeting. To recognize January as Alzheimer's month, Gagnon will speak on the latest developments in research and treatment in the field. The meeting will be held at the Oakville Conference Centre at 2515 Wyecroft Rd. Gagnon will discuss how clinical practice for the geriatrician is focused on the frail elderly who often face multiple and complex health problems. After the age of 70, about one third of the elderly face cognitive problems ranging from memory loss to dementia. "At least half the people I see in hospital have dementia," said Gagnon, who is one of only 100 geriatricians in Canada. "That's a big risk for discharge. They are continually being re-admitted -- not because their disease is worse, but because they forget to take their medication." The next speaker following Gagnon for the Canadian Club of Halton Peel will be chef and owner of The Twisted Fork, Michael Killip, on Thursday, Feb. 7. His speech is entitled, `It's the Food, Dude.' The first not-for-profit, non-political, non-denominational Canadian Club was formed in Hamilton in 1893. Registration/cash bar is at 6 p.m., dinner is at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $30 for members/$40 guests/$15 students. Contact the club at 905-827-6302 or bwylie@globalserve.net.
