www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 14, 2007 - 3 Toronto Rock, Argos to use new sports complex Continued from page 1 lacrosse, inline hockey, field hockey the list goes on. Rugby, ultimate Frisbee, baseball, football all of this will happen in the new Oakville complex, which will boast a 16,000-sq. ft. indoor facility. The centre was designed to be a home for Manchester United Soccer Schools (MUSS), making it the second facility in the world built purposely for the schools. "It's always about positioning," head of MUSS Robin van der Laan said of the decision to make Oakville home to a Man U Soccer Schools facility. "Obviously, Oakville's got a huge soccer community, the Greater Toronto Area in general. We picked the right partners and the right area, and that's the magic formula." And talk about partnerships. The Toronto Argonauts will make the facility their permanent home for indoor practices. The National Lacrosse League's Toronto Rock is also on board, and on top of a branded partnership with Man U Soccer Schools, Nike has also lent its name. "Our whole philosophy is LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER BREAKING GROUND: On hand for the groundbreaking ceremony of Oakville's new multi-sport facility were (l-r) Ward 4 Councillor Roger Lapworth, Toronto Argo Raymond Fontaine, Ward 2 Councillor Kathy Duddeck, Ward 1 Councillor Alan Johnston, Mayor Rob Burton, Ward 3 Councillor Mary Chapin, Neil Jamieson of Sports Centre Design and Management, Ward 4 Councillor Allan Elgar and head of Man U Soccer Schools Robin van der Laan. built on partnerships," said Neil Jamieson, president and CEO of SportsCentre Design and Management, which also owns and operates the Oakville Sports Centre. Holding up illustrations of what the inside of the two-floor complex will hold, Jamieson pointed to a fitness studio for parents to use while watching their kids train, party rooms, a 300-seat "UK pub-style" restaurant, pro shop, change rooms, training centre, observation deck, physiotherapy clinic plenty of good- ies for sports fans. Mayor Rob Burton, who attended yesterday's groundbreaking along with a handful of councillors, said the decision to build this sports centre in Oakville is recognition of one of the town's strengths. "Oakville's already a powerhouse in kid's sports. We've already got the best soccer club on the continent," said Burton. "All this does is recognize what a leader Oakville is." Burton noted the development will be welcome to those living in the area, and to Oakville residents in general, especially in light of recent developments residents have opposed. "This is a happy day," Burton said. "Not only have we needed this for a while, but the community around here have been wishing and hoping for a development on this land." Toronto Argonauts linebacker Raymond Fontaine attended the groundbreaking to support what will be his team's new indoor home. "The Argos have had a long relationship with the previous dome, weather permitting, we would use the facility for practices," said Fontaine. "We're very excited to be using this new facility, and to see it being built." Defining moments in life... 430 South Service Rd.
