The dinner will be open not only to those who have been in need of the Salvation Army's services, but people at risk of spending Christmas alone. "There are people in the community who will not be with their families this Christmas season. They may be older people who have no families to have Christmas with or they could even be students who are alone during the Christmas holidays," said Bev Gardner, Oakville Salvation Army. "Our goal is to give everyone a warm welcome and to give them a little bit of Christmas that they might otherwise not be able to experience this year." Gardner said in addition to offering a helping hand, the annual dinner is a special thank you to all those who trusted the Salvation Army to help them through difficult times. And what a thank you it will be. Last year's Christmas Dinner menu included butternut squash soup, garden tomato basil dressing, roasted turkey, old fashioned stuffing, mixed vegetables and Swiss apple strudel with vanilla sauce for desert. Since the same five-star chef will be returning to cook this year's dinner, the evening promises to be one to remember. "It's going to be a detailed dinner with all the fixings," said Gardner. In addition to the festive food, Christmas music will be playing to add to the experience and the man in red will be making an early visit from the North Pole to see all the children present. When asked to describe why the Salvation Army is holding this free dinner for the less fortunate, Gardner said the answer is simple. "We truly do love our community and we want to express that with this dinner," she said. "It's really important to get together, support one another in the community and just acknowledge each other. Christmas to the Salvation Army is about celebrating the birth of Jesus, so we just want to share the hope that he offers to everyone." The Oakville Salvation Army's Christmas Dinner will be held at St. Paul's United Church, 445 Rebecca St. Although the Salvation Army can handle as many as 230 guests, seating is on a first-come first-serve basis. Gardner is asking people to call and make reservations.
