www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 14, 2007 - 13 Unique program drives home sobering lesson Continued from page 10 in youth could be seen in the student members of Rage Against Impaired Driving (RAID), who helped run the obstacle course with police. Grade 12 student Cassidie Baril was one of several RAID members keeping an eye on those wearing the Fatal Vision glasses to make sure they did not fall and actually hurt themselves. For Baril, spreading the message of the dangers of impaired driving is worth a few moments of her time. "We just think that a lot of people aren't aware of what a serious problem it is, so we want to just get the word out there," she said, pausing briefly to steady a student wearing the fatal vision glasses. "Even just watching people do this, it seems funny, but people actually get like this when they're drunk and then they try to drive. It's scary." Other RAID members helped out by asking students skill-testing questions they were required to answer to get their Big Mac coupon. "Most of them are informational questions that people can think about after they've answered them. Stuff like, `True or false, a bottle of beer, a shot of liquor and a glass of wine all have the same amount of alcohol.' Most people think it's false, but it's actually true. So, it's something to think about that alcohol can affect you in different ways," said Olivia Harrison, a Grade 12 student. "Another question says, `Other than cars, what vehicles can you get charged for operating while impaired?' So this would be boats and jet skis and stuff like that. It's pretty intense." This is the second year Halton Police has used the RIDE 101 program to bring their concerns about drinking and driving to the student body, and the initiative is only growing in popularity. Police said what began in Oakville as a small pilot project last year has spread to Burlington and Georgetown with other police services also making inquires about importing the program into their jurisdictions. "It's a unique program that hasn't been tried before," said Thomas. "I think the kids respond to it because it's hands on rather than someone just sitting there like a talking head, telling them about it. The Fatal Vision glasses, which were provided by MADD, really demon- strate the effects of alcohol." The RIDE 101 program continued Wednesday night with Iroquois Ridge students joining police at a RIDE spot check on Speers Road in Oakville. During the spot check, students engaged the public and provided them with a handout and, in a new twist this year, McDonald's provided a coupon for a free Big Mac to participating drivers.
