10 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 14, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com RIDE 101 provides students with staggering results By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF S taggering, slumping and unable to follow the white line before them, many Iroquois Ridge High School students found out what it was like to fail a police roadside sobriety test even though none of them had ingested so much as a drop of alcohol. The contradiction is courtesy of RIDE 101, a Halton Police initiative in which police partner with local students, businesses and community organizations to educate young future drivers about the importance of driving responsibly and the dangers of impaired driving. "The kids are given some pamphlets and information on safe driving practices. They get to use Fatal Vision glasses, which simulate the effects of alcohol, they actually walk a line and you'll see them weaving all over the place," said Constable Shawn Thomas, Halton Police. "From there the students get to blow into a Drager and then they get to learn the inner workings of the Drager system, which is the roadside device police use during spotchecks." Upon completing this educational obstacle course, students were rewarded with a coupon for a free Big Mac at McDonald's, one of this year's community partners. The interesting nature of the program, which took place at Iroquois Ridge High School on Tuesday, and the promise of free food were all the students needed to volunteer for the experience. As a growing crowd of their peers watched, students put on the Fatal Vision glasses and attempted to walk on a seven-foot line of white tape with varied levels of success. The students actually appeared intoxicated, with many struggling to hold their balance as they walked the line while others strayed from the line entirely. MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER FATAL VISION: Iroquois Ridge High School student Greg Drozdiuk tries to keep his balance as he walks the line wearing Fatal Vision Goggles during the RIDE 101 program. The program was created by Halton Regional police in partnership with students and targets young drivers of tomorrow. Many students expressed surprise when they took off the glasses to find out where they were standing. "It was pretty interesting. It was actually like you were drunk, it was pretty difficult, " said student Dean Maimonis. "One was a pair of day glasses, which were a bit easier, but the other ones made it like you were drunk at night and it was really hard to walk with them." Another student, Milan Marjanovich, had similar difficulties. "I was walking on the other side (of the line) because I couldn't see," he said. "You think you're doing good, but really you're not." Having experienced what it is like trying to walk a straight line while impaired, both young men said they now have very definite opinions about driving a car in such a condition. "I'm never going to do it," said Maimonis. "Never drink and drive," added Marjanovich. Words like these are music to ears of the Halton Police. However, while police hope the students who experience this program will hold on to its lessons and avoid drinking and driving themselves, they also hope the students will spread their lessons to others. "We don't believe that the majority of these kids are going to drink and drive. Quite to the contrary, we believe most of them won't, but what we would like to see is all of them make an effort to stop someone they know or love from getting behind the wheel when they're drunk," said Halton Police Sgt. Peter Payne. "We have to get that message out that this is something that needs to be stopped and by teaching them at this young age hopefully what we're doing is getting more responsible adults."
