24 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 12, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Dinner party tickets available as stocking stuffers For many, the December holiday time presents gift-giving problems. Many shoppers feel guilty spending money on frivolities when they are reminded daily of so many people who lack personal safety or the barest essentials. But there is a solution. There is a way to make the women in your life happy while helping people in need. Each year, the Women of Halton Action Movement (WHAM) host The Dinner Party with a speaker to commemorate International Women's Day. The Dinner Party is on Wednesday, March 5 at the Oakville Conference & Banquet Centre. Tickets cost $45. Proceeds are split evenly between Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services of Halton (SAVIS) and Canadians Supporting Afghan Women (CSAW). SAVIS provides free counseling to victims of sexual assault and violence, 24 hour crisis intervention, and an educational outreach program to promote social change. CSAW supports the schooling of 5,000 girls in Afghanistan, a vocational resource centre, and libraries. Canadians are at the forefront of support for Afghan women and children, and this work in Afghanistan remains crucial. This year, Deborah Ellis, winner of The Governor General's Award for literature, will be the keynote speaker. Ellis is a social and political activist whose many books reflect her principles. Her visit to Afghanistan in 1997 resulted in a trilogy that examined the plight of women and children there. In 2006, she was made a Member of the Order of Ontario. Proceeds from the sale of her books are donated to charities such as UNICEF and Street Kids International. Sponsorships of tables are also available for $100. Tables can be sponsored in honour or in memory of women who have made a difference. A commemorative sign with the wording of the sponsor's choice will be displayed on one of the tables. If desired, it can be on the sponsor's table. For tickets or more information contact WHAM at 905-825-3622. Choosing gifts for some people can be quite an ordeal. That's why Ten Thousand Villages is once again running the Living Gift Festival this holiday season, with a unique collection of gifts to help give something little to someone who has a lot and a lot to someone who hasn't got much at all. In buying a Living Gift, purchasers help Mennonite Central Committee Ten Thousand Villages' parent organization to carry out important relief and development work around the world. The recipient receives a detailed description of the present you chose for them, while the actual gift goes to those in developing countries who need it most. For an additional $1, a fair trade card and ornament can be purchased to complete your gift. "Unique presents are hard to find. At Ten Thousand Villages, we're offering creative gifts that help reduce poverty at the same time. Each one makes a real difference, whether you spend $33 or $330," says Marv Frey, Executive Director of Ten Thousand Villages Canada. Ten Thousand Villages is a non-profit, fair trade organization that provides vital, fair income to people in the developing world by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America.
