Oakville 905 815 1949 Fern Hill makes history with United Way donation By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF www.tradingplacescanada.com Snuggle Up gg p For The Holidays Fern Hill School has made fundraising history. The local elementary school handed United Way of Oakville a cheque for $51,441 on Friday, becoming the first school to raise more than $50,000 for the local charitable organization. "This is a tremendous accomplishment," said CEO of United Way of Oakville, Barbara Burton. "These students have truly raised the bar for other schools in Oakville." And they did it all in the course of one week back in October. "It's a whole team effort here," said school director, Joanne McLean. "There was staff donations, students, parents, suppliers. It was everyone together." This surge to help out United Way of Oakville began Saturday, Oct. 13 with a garage sale. The fundraising continued at Fern Hill throughout the week with a silent auction, a dinner, car show and photo day, Krispie Kreme DEREK WOOLLAM / OAKVILLE BEAVER RECORD DONATION: Fern Hill staff members Nancy Joyce, administrative staff, and Ardith Connor, senior Kindergarten teacher, present a cheque for $51,441 to Barbara Burton (middle) CEO of United Way Oakville, on behalf of Fern Hill School. That's why United Way of Oakville's Kate Williamson wasn't surprised to see Fern Hill pass the $50,000 mark. "We knew they could achieve this," said the fundraising manager, smiling. "The spirit at Fern Hill is just great." The donation will help United Way of Oakville continue to support 31 health and social service agencies through its fundraising campaign, which runs from September through to the end of December. The four key service areas the notfor-profit organization supports are strengthening families, supporting independence and well-being in seniors, promoting self-sufficiency, and supporting those in crisis. Fern Hill School is familiar with the role United Way of Oakville plays in town. This marks the 17th year the school ran a campaign to support the organization. "United Way has become a part of the fabric of Fern Hill culture," said McLean. "Students and faculty alike look forward to United Way week every year." Added McLean, "We are also extremely grateful to our parents who support the event with their time, donations and enthusiasm." Last year, Fern Hill raised more than $40,000 for the cause, and it seems each year the tally grows. "Community outreach is very important to us," said McLean. "It's part of the curriculum here. We do a lot of fundraising for others."
