With the Saturday morning confrontation between Steve Remian and police happening only a few metres away, these residents paint a picture of a deeply-troubled and armed Remian with whom police desperately tried to negotiate. "They did everything they could to try to convince him not to kill himself," said one Dalewood Drive resident, whose property connects to the park. "They tried to put themselves in his position and said, `Steve it doesn't have to be like this,' they always referred to him by his first name. They tried to be as personable as they could be, but most of the conversation was them saying, `You've got to put the gun down, put the gun down,'" said the resident, who did not want to be identified. The lead-up to this incident began at around 1:34 a.m. when Halton police received a 911 call about a man behaving strangely, and possibly armed with a gun at a Tim Hortons coffee shop in the Trafalgar Road and Randall Street area.
