Miller applies for help for the students in need, and estimates so far 30-40 students at Blakelock have received help from the Foundation. "None of the kids that we've given money to have asked for anything but essentials," he said. "We have a student at this school that use to have to go to the YMCA to have a shower. We have many students in different situations. "It's incumbent upon us to ensure that everyone has the same opportunities here." For the Grade 11 student, she moved to Oakville recently to live with her aunt and uncle. The barriers program has helped her to adjust. "Without it, it would just be harder for me. I grew up in a very poor place and I moved to Oakville a couple years ago. This is a very rich place," she said. Rose, age 18 school, and most people would not expect a student leader to be in the economic situation (she) is in." An 18-year-old student, who asked to be identified as Rose, began receiving assistance from the Foundation two years ago. "I was stressed from a lot of things outside school, and inside school, I was trying to keep it together," she said. "I've lived on my own for two years now, so I was kind of struggling with being able to go to school. I didn't always have a place to stay. "I went to see Angela (the guidance counsellor), and she helped me get help." Rose says the barriers program helped make it easier for her to stay in school. Without the assistance, she says, "I would have stayed in school, but it would have been very hard for me. There was a while in my life when I was going from house to house." She added, "This really helped a lot. I could always go get food, go grocery shopping, have bus tickets. I knew if I needed anything, I could just go and ask for it and it wouldn't be an issue." To celebrate its successes, The Halton Learning Foundation hosted A Brighter Future dinner recently in Oakville. The featured guest was Toronto Argonauts quarterback and Oakville resident, Damon Allen. There were also student performances from M.M.s Robinson High School, Alexander's Public School, Milton District High School and Robert Batemen High School. OAKVILLE - Celebrating 150 years!
