www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday December 1, 2007 - 5 QUALITY INTEGRITY VALUE Town Council ponders earlier start to meetings An earlier start to Town Council meetings means an earlier bed time for everyone involved. But at least one Oakville councillor isn't sure how well a proposal for earlier meetings might work for commuters. Council, which has traditionally started its meetings at 7:30 p.m., will consider a change to its procedural bylaw that would move meeting starting times back to 7 p.m. Meetings would be scheduled to end at 10 p.m., but would be allowed to continue until 10:30 p.m., with approval of council. The current procedural bylaw allows meetings to continue until 11:30 p.m., with the approval of council. "We're trying to balance the conveniences of competing sets of people. We want it to be in the evening so it's convenient for the public, but we also don't want to abuse the staff who work all day," Mayor Rob Burton said afterwards. "I've always thought that the later in the evening it gets, the harder it is to make the smart decisions." Although a meeting start time of 6:30 p.m. was proposed to the Town's Administrative Services Committee on Tuesday night, the proposal was amended after Ward 3 Councillor Keith Bird expressed concerns about the potential impact on people, including councillors, who work out-of-town. "People ran (for election), I believe, on the understanding that it was effectively evening employment," noted Bird, who is retired. The issue of changing the starting times of the meetings will be considered at the final council meeting of the year, on Dec. 17. If approved, the change would take effect in January. An updated façade, including a clock tower, is planned for the two-storey building on the southwest corner of the intersection. Constructed about 50 years ago, the building currently houses the IODE Opportunity Shop and three other retail units on the ground floor. Four residential units are on the second floor of the building. While the building's use won't change, the new façade will create the look of four separate vertical units, while adding the non-chiming clock tower. Further details of the plan will be released as the company goes through the town's site plan process, but Ward 2 Councillor Cathy Duddeck says there is great enthusiasm for the revitalization of the building. 1047 North Service Road East, Oakville For Complimentary In Home Consultation CALL (905) 337-2900 CALL 1-888-THE-CLOSET Design with Candice Olson seen on WTN & HGTV (1-888-843-2567) email: info@closetandstorageconcepts.ca Supplier of choice for Divine www.closetandstorageconcepts.ca New Patients Welcome!
