Rigatoni toasts ten It was reason to celebrate, to count one's blessings, to cry, and to remember a boy named Christopher Douthart and his story of inspiration. Le Dome Banquet Centre, owned by the Rizzuti family, hosted the annual Rigatoni for Research Dinner and Silent Auction for the tenth year. A sold-out crowd of more than 500 guests celebrated the Rigatoni Team, led by Christopher's parents Kathy and Danny Douthart, with a Toast to Ten. Rigatoni for Research began in September 1998 with a small ripple of hope and has manifested in a tidal wave. Rigatoni for Research has raised a staggering $1.5 million for innovative research and purchase of equipment for the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre, housed at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. Douthart, who sits on an Allocation Committee at Sick Kids, personally oversees that money raised from this event goes 100 per cent to fighting brain tumour disease. More than 100 new cases of brain tumours are diagnosed at Sick Kids yearly -- a statistic that's rising at a rate of 20 per cent a year. In children, brain tumours are the most common malignancy after leukemia. Kathy and Danny Douthart, Christopher's parents and founders of Rigatoni for Research, credit the success of this event to their Rigatoni Team -- Judy and George Collaton, Lisa Guimaraes, Wendy Carlan, Tina Daly, Maria Caccamo, Trish Torrance, and Maureen and Brent Christensen. In addition, they describe an incredible group of volunteers, both family and friends, as "outrageously awesome." "The outpouring of support and unwavering sense of commitment that we have received over the past ten years is an inspiration," said Kathy, "It really is our life lesson that there are angels among us." Tragically, in 1997, the Doutharts' seven-year-old son Christopher passed away from a brain tumour. Since that time, the Douthart family, along with an army of dedicated supporters, has made it their personal quest to never give up Christopher's fight. "Christopher fought this disease with everything he had and when he died, he passed the torch of hope onto us and we will never give up the fight that our boy started!"
