De 24th @1 1p.m. Students of River Oaks Public School endured a hectic morning, yesterday, after a bomb threat caused the evacuation of their school. At approximately 3 a.m. an adult male voice left a message on the school's answering machine noting that there was a bomb in the building. This message was discovered by school staff at around 7:55 a.m., prior to the start of school. "We contacted Halton Regional Police and in accordance with our protocol we made plans to evacuate all our students," said Dane Tutton, Superintendent of Education, Halton District School Board. "Most of our kids didn't even get in the building and our kids, along with staff, were moved to Sunningdale Public School, which is where they are right now." Halton police quickly arrived at the scene and secured the school while a K9 unit equipped with a bomb-sniffing dog, cour- tesy of the Hamilton Police Service, was deployed at around 10:45 a.m. "We think it's a hoax, however, we'd rather be safe than sorry," said Tutton. "We want to make sure our students are safe so we're going the extra mile to make sure everything is okay." As police searched the school for anything suspicious the 600 evacuated River Oaks students waited in the Sunningdale gymnasium where they were given access to the school phone, so they could call their parents and let them know what was happening. Students who were in the school when the threatening message was discovered say the evacuation came so fast some did not have enough time to grab their jackets. "We were in the gym playing basketball this morning and then they evacuated us out," said Mitch Atkinson, Grade 8. "They were like, `Hurry, get out, get out,' so we didn't have much time to get our stuff or anything like that." After meeting out on the soccer field the students walked the 1.2 kilometres from River Oaks School at 2173 Munn's Way to Sunningdale School at 1434 Oxford Ave. "It's pretty scary," said Dylan Munro, a Grade 8 River Oaks student. "It makes me feel not as safe going to school here. It's weird that something like this would happen in Oakville." At around 11:30 a.m. police emerged from the school and stated that no bomb had been found on the premises at which point Tutton announced that students were being escorted by staff back from Sunningdale to resume their classes. While the bomb threat may have been a hoax, Halton police are definitely not laughing with Staff Sgt. Kim Duncan noting the Halton Police District 2 Criminal Investigations Bureau will continue to investigate this incident to determine the identity of the caller. "There's a number of criminal charges we can go with, mischief being the greatest one," she said. LAST WEEK TO ORDER for guaranteed Christmas delivery!
