James Hawks boys and girls volleyball teams continued their outstanding seasons by earning a sweep of the East Tier 1 volleyball titles Wednesday night at White Oaks. The boys' team remained undefeated by downing Montclair while the girls' team gained a measure of revenge by topping River Oaks, the team that handed them their only loss of the season. The boys' final pitted the league's top two teams. Montclair had suffered only one loss all season, at the hands of E.J. James. The Montclair squad would not be able to end their rivals' undefeated run as they fell 2513, 25-15. Montclair played well but the Hawks had too many hitters. E.J. James could turn defence to offence through the efforts of their libero and setter, who showed good passing and setting to allow hitters Cole Vandenbygaart, Sam Sadler and Ryan Thompson to put the ball away on their spikes. The team is coached by Donalou Langdon. The E.J. James girls finished second in the regular season after losing a three-set match by two points to River Oaks. The two teams met again in the East final and this time E.J. James came away with a 25-22, 2518 victory. In the first set, River Oaks started out strong but the Hawks took the lead at 1211. The game was back and forth and the teams found themselves deadlocked at 2121. E.J. James took three of the next four points, though, and Amy Pike, who hit well all match, delivered an unreturnable serve to close out the first set. In the second set the Hawks built an early 13-5 lead. River Oaks showed a lot of heart and setters Erika Henry, who served very well, Amy Hill and Jenna Barsevich made some great defensive digs but the team was unable to pull even. Pike and E.J. James teammates Alex Sagl and Taylor Bunnell all put away a number of points with their hits. The team is coached by Jerry Burlington. All four teams will to the Halton championships at E.C. Drury in Milton on Tuesday, Nov. 27th from 4-9:30 p.m. Fencers earn medals at Brock Invitational Jacek Baldowski won the gold medal in veteran mixed epee, one of three medals earned by Oakville's Canadian Fencing Academy at the Brock Invitational Ontario Circuit Competition, one of the largest fencing events in North America. Mark Zbigniew Zielinski won the other two medals, taking the silver after finishing behind Baldowski in the veteran mixed epee. He also earned a bronze medal in the open men's epee. Baldowski and Zbigniew Zielinski's onetwo finish highlighted a strong showing by the academy in the mixed epee as Kirsten Ball (fifth) and Stephen Wilson (ninth) also turned in top-10 finishes. In open men's epee, Wilson was 35th, Johnathan Cheevers 47th and Roman Jakubowski was 53rd. In women's epee Janet Jackowski finished eighth and Evelyn Zielinski 37th. In men's foil Rick Behnke placed sixth and Sam Salerno was 62nd. In women's foil Leah Fidanza finished in eighth and Ashley Chin placed 19th. In team competitions, members traveled to Kingston for the RMC Team Invitational. The women's foil team of Fidanza, Ball and Allison Spencer finished in sixth place. The academy's youth fencers also turned in some strong results. At the recent Westdale Tournament, Sean Cavan (11-and-under division) and Maddison Osborne (13-and-under division) took home bronze medals. New Central boys win Tier 2 thriller,West Oak takes girls' final New Central might be a small school but it came up big in the East Tier II boys' volleyball championships at Iroquois Ridge High School. New Central and Falgarwood staged a battle worthy of a championship game with great hitting, passing, setting and serving. In the end, it was New Central pulling out a tight 25-23, 30-28 victory to take the title. New Central's Mitch Shannon dominated the court with setter Colin Davidson setting him up for a number of kills in both games. Falgarwood had a well balanced team but no one with the same height or powerful attack. Falgarwood led for much of first set with consistent play and good serving but they ran into trouble when Shannon ran off a string of eight points and gave New Central a 2019 lead. In the second set, Falgarwood had three set points but New Central's fan support and never-quit attitude by each player allowed it to battle back and claim the pennant. New Central is coached by Greg Kay. In the girls championship game, it was West Oak defeating Post's Corners 25-21, 25-19. There were some momentum swings especially in the opening set but West Oak was able to set up their hitters with some good passing and setting. West Oak got on a roll in the second set thanks to some good serving. West Oak is coached by Shari Patterson and Michael Gratton. All four teams advanced to the Halton Tier II championship, which was held last night in Milton.
