www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 23, 2007 - 45 New Halton LHIN Emergency lead named Dr. Eric Letovsky has been named as the Halton Emergency Department (ED) lead, a new role in each of Ontario's 14 Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) that will help improve wait times and the quality of emergency care locally and across the province. Mississauga Halton LHIN Chief Executive Officer Bill MacLeod announced the appointment earlier this week. "The challenges faced by our emergency departments are considerable and affect our entire health care system," said MacLeod. "We welcome Dr. Letovsky's expertise as we begin to work together with hospitals across our LHIN to reduce wait times and improve patient flow in our emergency rooms." Letovsky is the Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Credit Valley Hospital. He is a graduate of Yale and McGill Universities, and is certified in Emergency Medicine by both the College of Family Physicians of Canada, as well as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is the Director of the Division of Emergency Medicine in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, where he is a full professor in the faculty of medicine. "I am very excited about the opportunity to be part of the process which will help improve access to emergency care for our region," said Letovsky. "It is one of the most pressing health care issues in Canada today." The appointment of LHIN ED leaders is a key component of the provincial ED Action Plan. LHIN ED leads are accountable to the LHIN. Leads are also responsible to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for human resource planning and the development of an ED information system. LHIN ED leaders will work with the chair of the provincial ED Wait Times Expert Panel, which takes the place of the Working Group on Improving Access to Emergency Services. The expert panel, cochaired by Dr. Michael Schull and Ken Deane, will advise the ministry on how to best implement a strategy to improve access to emergency services and reduce wait times. The Mississauga Halton LHIN is a crown agency responsible for planning, integrating and funding more than 85 health service providers, including hospitals, longterm care homes, mental health and addictions agencies, community support services, community health centres, and the Mississauga Halton CCAC. The Mississauga Halton LHIN includes the municipalities of South Etobicoke, Mississauga, Halton Hills, Oakville, and Milton and is home to over one million people.
