46 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 16, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Church hosts Jazz Vespers service Nov. 25 Local jazz musicians are hosting an encore evening of jazz worship at Trafalgar Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Jazz Vespers service will feature Oakville jazz pianist Brian Hayman and local sax player Toby Stewart as well as Toronto vocalist Mae Cromwell, who will join Trafalgar's regulars, Bruce Fraser, Michael Lemiski, Imants Abols and Bob McMillan, all led by Andrew Donaldson. The church's first Jazz Vespers received such a good reception last June that Rev. Kristine O'Brien said they made immediate plans for an encore. "We hope to draw in those who have been busy all weekend, to relax in an atmosphere of joy and worship," said O'Brien. She noted like the first service last June, it will be "a free-flowing, prayerful liturgy for those who need the time and space to catch their breath." Jazz Vespers services are held in churches all over the United States and Canada, in many different forms and in many different denominations. The phenomenon began in New York City in 1961 when the late Reverend John Garcia Gensel started an evening service at St. Peters Lutheran Church, designed for those musicians of his growing night ministry who couldn't make it to Sunday morning service after playing those late Saturday night gigs. It soon became the church home for many of the musicians and their families, including the legendary "Duke" Ellington. The music at Trafalgar Presbyterian Church will be a mixture of jazz tunes and traditional hymns in a jazz style. "You will recognize hymns such as Precious Lord, Take My Hand and Oh, Happy Day," says the church's music leader Andrew Donaldson. "We hope that our jazz services become an Oakville tradition."
