www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 16, 2007 - 39 Abbey Park High School a hot place to be By Hannah Bell Grade 12 APHS bbey Park students have been, and will continue, achieving success in a variety of fields. We continue to add to our reputation as a cross-country powerhouse with another provincial championship. Our Halloween for Hunger campaign generated a fantastic response for the Fareshare Food Bank of Oakville and our first school dance of the year was a great success with lots of interesting costume ideas. Additionally, our drama program has been putting the final touches on its upcoming production of Love, Death & the Prom by Jon Jory. Thank you to the staff, students, parents, and community volunteers who continue to make Abbey Park High School a hot place to be. The Abbey Park cross-country team headed to Niagara Falls on Saturday for the OFSAA Provincial Championships. With last season's provincial championship win it would be a tough task to repeat that result. Our new group of Junior Girls didn't disappoint. In a very difficult race with a very deep field of over 250 runners and 40 of the top teams in the province the Junior Girls defended their OFSAA Championship. They narrowly beat A.B Lucas and Huron Park, both from the London area. The week of Oct. 29, Abbey Park ran its fourth annual Halloween for Hunger food drive. This event was the most successful food drive the school has ever seen, with 47 groups participating to canvas more than 5,660 houses throughout Glen Abbey for non-perishable food items. These items were then taken to Oakville's Fareshare Food Bank on Speers Road. This year we were fortunate enough to collect an overwhelming 12 vanloads of food, greatly impressing the food bank. Mr. Ron Ziegal, a volunteer with the food bank, commented, "This is the most food we've ever received from any one school." As November gets underway there will be several things going on, one of which is Coffee House. Students and parents are invited to see a variety of performances ranging from art displays, dance and acoustic music. Auditions were held on Nov. 12 and were a great success, providing quite the struggle to create a set list A with all the incredibly talented students within the school. The end of November brings with it the new and improved Recognition Rally, where students who have achieved excellence in many areas will be recognized for their efforts. Also approaching at Abbey Park is the winter semi formal. Lastly we want to promote Abbey Park's upcoming fall production Love, Death & the Prom by Jon Jory. This hard-hitting, poignant and funny play is as real as high school itself. Covering all of the highs, lows, challenges, joys, and overall experiences of the fast-paced high school life, Love, Death & the Prom is a play you won't want to miss. The show will be running from Wednesday, Nov. 21 through Saturday, Nov. 24 starting at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $4 for children under 12. Advanced sales began Thursday, Nov. 15 at the lobby ticket booth between 11:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Abbey Park continues to draw on the strengths of our student, staff and parent community to celebrate student growth through the pursuit of excellence and life long learning. * FREE SERVICE To Fallsview Casino *After $10 Casino Rebate EVERY WEDNESDAY Morning & Afternoon from Hopedale Mall EVERY SUN, TUES, THURS, FRI & SAT From Carpool Lot Guelph Line, North Service Road FOR RESERVATIONS CALL Taxes included on all trips. 168 CLARENCE ST., PORT COLBORNE, ON, L3K 3G5 T.I.C.O.#50007535 1-800-838-1789 Caledonia, Hagersville area, call branch office 905-765-3837.
