www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 16, 2007 - 27 First annual Kid of the Year contest City Parent Newsmagazine, Canada's leading parenting publication, is looking to recognize three students who have gone "above and beyond" to make a positive difference. The Kid of the Year contest is co-presented by TVO, and is open to students across Ontario, who are in Grades 1 6. Deadline for nominations is Dec. 31. "City Parent and TVO want to recognize the efforts of children, who have made significant contributions to the preservation of the environment, who have demonstrated exemplary citizenship and those who have overcome odds to achieve their goals," explains Cathryn Oliver, publisher of City Parent. Three separate winners will be awarded: Green Leader, for a child who has made a difference to the environment, an Exemplary Citizenship award for someone who goes above and beyond to volunteer in his or her community, and a Challenge Champion, for a child who overcomes adversity to meet a goal. The three winners will receive a prize package valued at over $2,000, including a Tundra Book collection, an exclusive private tour of the TVO studios and a $1,000 RESP. Every child nominated will also receive a prize including a free bowling game at Classic Bowl. To nominate a child, go to www.cityparent.com. The Kid of the Year contest coincides with the relaunch of the new cityparent.com website. This website is designed to provide parents with the ultimate "parenting" resource of a parent-to-parent forum. The forum provides contact with other parents 24/7. In addition to the forum, the site offers comprehensive listings of family events in Halton and across Ontario. While the re-launched site is already up and running, starting Monday, parents can log on the forum and communicate directly with some of the parenting experts that are regular contributors to City Parent Newsmagazine. "If parents have specific things they want to chat with any of those experts about, they can go on during those hours and the professionals will respond directly back to them," explains Oliver. Fielding questions will be a panel of parental experts set up for next week, Monday through Friday, from 2-9 p.m. On Monday, Nov. 19, City Parent "Virtuous Consumer" columnist Leslie Garrett, will host a Parenting Forum featuring tips for a greener lifestyle what clothes to buy, which products to use, and how to minimize your environmental footprint. An Education Forum is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 20, featuring educator and parenting coach, Rob Stringer. He'll address how to get the most out of parent / teacher relations, motivating your child, report cards, math tips and more. Parent and author Ann Douglas will present a Behaviour Forum on Wednesday, Nov. 21. The floor will be open to discuss everything from breastfeeding to toilet training to mealtime solutions. Health and Wellness is the topic of the day on Thursday, Nov. 22, featuring health and wellness personal trainer, Kevin Mackinnon. He'll address how to get the family moving, how to bring daily physical activity to your home, and how to find a sport that fits your family for each season. Rounding out the week is parental expert Diane Peters, City Parent's Arts and Entertainment editor. Peters will host an Activities Forum and will discuss holiday season outings, top CDs and DVDs, introducing kids to the arts and more. The Parent to Parent forum is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Oliver explained, but the live interaction occurs on weekdays between 2-9 p.m. GOING OUT OF BUSINESS ENTIRE STORE · MUST SELL TO THE BARE WALLS · STORE FIXTURES FOR SALE 50 % OFF RITA'S FASHIONS (Between East Side Mario's and Sears) MAPLEVIEW CENTRE - UPPER LEVEL 900 MAPLE AVENUE 905-634-1620 Warehouse Sale Reclaimed timber table & 4 genuine leather chairs SAVINGS UP TO 50% OFF Don't miss out on these unbelievable instock value.
