www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 9, 2007 - 21 Time to champion affordable housing November 22 is National Housing Day, and Halton Region wants residents and businesses to take action and focus on the local efforts to provide housing for those who need shelter and affordable homes. "There are more than 1,800 people on the waiting list for government-assisted housing in Halton," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "National Housing Day is our opportunity to highlight this critical community need." This year, Halton will be recognizing the day with various community events. Voices for Housing Choices -- a panel of community members sharing personal stories about housing -- will have stories and photos on display in all four local municipalities at public libraries and Town and City Halls from Nov. 19 to 23. Halton's `Be a Hero. Be a Voice for Affordable Housing' contest will culminate with an awards ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 590 Argus Rd. The event is open to the public and will feature keynote speaker Rick Campanelli, former MuchMusic VJ and reporter for Entertainment Tonight Canada. Other ways to get involved include volunteering or donating to a housing charity, sponsoring a food or coat drive at work or school and contacting local MPs and MPPS to advocate for affordable housing . "It is important that we work together with other orders of government so we can create a mix of housing types and affordability levels," said Carr. "This is vital to creating healthy communities for all residents. People should be able to remain in Halton through all stages of their lives." Recognizing the importance of housing in creating healthy communities, regional council approved a Comprehensive Housing Strategy for Halton Region last year that addresses housing needs from now until 2015. The strategy incorporates a continuum of housing types for all incomes and stages of life -- from emergency shelters and government-assisted housing to private sector affordable housing.
