This year's theme is Christmas through the Decades and for years the parade has been part of a story of giving back to our community. Sometimes, we get so caught W up with the excitement of Christmas that we forget that there are many who live in our community who go without over the holidays. The Santa Claus Parade has a strong history with its toy and food drives and the sale of red noses for charity to make our community a better place for those less fortunate. But what about those families that struggle to place even one gift under the tree? The Oakville Fire Fighters firmly believe that every child deserves at least one special gift and so a crew will be on hand to accept new, unwrapped toys from Parade goers. This year one of the Parade's gold sponsors, Oakville Mazda, has partnered with the Fire Fighters to help with the Toy Drive. Oakville Mazda is as an official toy drop off location prior to the parade at 1291 Speers Rd. Gifts for older children are especially needed. We remind those bringing gifts to not forget children over the age of 12. Both the Kinsmen Club and the Fire Fighters will have trucks at the beginning of the Parade starting downtown at about 8:30 a.m. and volunteers will also be available to accept donations. The Fun Group of Families and Friends of Falgarwood return for another amazing year in the parade. Dressed as clowns, this group sells those "red noses" on parade day for $2, with all proceeds this year supporting the Oakville Parent-Child Centre. Make sure when purchasing your nose, you get it from this group as they are the only group sanctioned by the parade for red nose sales. Every year there are groups who embrace the spirit of the season and make the day of the parade a special community event. Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home and The Salvation Army both serve hot chocolate to those watching the parade while one of our local churches, The Sanctuary Oakville, serves hot chocolate to the Parade participants to keep them warm before the parade starts. The 2007 parade is on Saturday, Nov. 17, beginning at 9 a.m. The parade will begin at Lakeshore Road and Reynolds, go west on Lakeshore to Kerr Street, north on Kerr and end at Kerr and Stewart streets.
