www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 7, 2007 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR No reason to read confidential files Thank you for your journalism lesson, Von Jeppesen, in your letter to the editor, CAS coverage warranted, Oakville Beaver, Friday, Nov. 2. However, you have utterly missed the mark of why the Children's Aid Society (CAS) files story was so upsetting. Yes, it was a bad mistake to leave the files behind. Yes, a conscientious journalist should report on this and hold the CAS accountable. And finally yes, these files are deeply confidential. So if you find yourself in possession of such files, for everything that is good and descent in the world, don't read them. Simply close the file folder, and file your news story, complain to the Halton CAS, raise whatever ruckus you want to see this doesn't happen again, but have some respect for the people in the files, and don't read them. There was no earthly reason for the family or the reporter to read the files. There is even less reason to hold them ransom. Don't they say Halton CAS at the top of the page? Isn't that enough? If the files are in your hands, then the responsibility for their confidentiality now rests with you. If their secrets are revealed, it's now your fault, because they could have been returned securely, without anyone learning of their contents. THAD HARROUN Garbage disposal plan should be examined Re: Region takes first step toward full control of garbage, Oakville Beaver, Nov. 2. I compost, I recycle, reuse all I can, but still wind up with some stinky garbage, usually less than a bag a week. I certainly take a dim view of having garbage like that around for as long as two weeks, especially in the summer. Also, the cost of picking up the recyclables weekly would greatly increase for it seems to me that we have four to five different trucks running around to pick up different items, that is not to speak of the extra pollution this will create, running all these trucks every week.
