32 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 7, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Jr. Ice struck by Lightning The Oakville Jr. Ice scored the opening goal in its game Saturday against the Durham Lightning, but it was all downhill from there for the local Provincial Women's Hockey League squad. Durham scored five consecutive goals and coasted to a 6-2 win over the Ice at the Ajax Community Centre. Dayna Newsom notched her teamleading fourth goal of the season for Oakville, while Lisa Donachey also tallied. Paula LaGamba (two) and Donachey recorded assists. The Ice (3-4) is not scheduled to be in action again until Nov. 17, when it hosts Cambridge for a 1:15 p.m. start at Canlan Ice Sports. The Eagles' point total last weekend (determined by adding together each school's top four placings) was 281, nearly triple that of the 86 they won with last year. In fact, Abbey Park's top finisher Saturday (Jade Johnson, who came 47th) was 15 spots behind where the Eagles' fourth-fastest runner (Corinne Smith, 32nd) placed in 2006. London's A.B. Lucas, considered the favourite going in, finished second with 250 points. Huron Park, also from the London area, was third with 265. "It was very odd," said Abbey Park head coach Greg Dailey. "Originally, we had thought it would take a score of around 80 to win. All three schools didn't run exactly to their potential, but we tended to manage the best in the situation." Ailey Jarvis (51st), Brooke Johnston (55th), Paige Zeniuk (88th) and Jenna Seagrove (187th) rounded out the Eagles' winning team. "Usually, the winning score is lower, but there have been (winning) totals like that in the past," said Bryan Camani, the former phys-ed head at Abbey Park who also helped coach the Eagles this fall. "It just shows in some ways the quality across the province in certain age groups, for whatever reason. It comes down to it's a team sport. If your top two or three runners have an off-day and your fourth or fifth runners have a great day, for them... not that they jump into the 20s, but maybe they're typically in the 140s and go into the 80s or 70s, that's a 50-plus point swing right there." Johnson and Jarvis were part of last year's junior girls' championship team as well. Loyola, third in junior girls' team competition last year, finished fifth in the senior girls' division (Alicia Knox, Paulina Maher, Lindsay Bryant, Arienne MorencyCharbonneau, Amanda Pereira). Abbey Park added a 12thplace effort in midget boys' action, led by a sixth-overall showing by Daniel Mathie. "That was pretty good because he came in in September and had never really trained. He just has so much natural ability," Dailey said of Mathie, who also plays rugby for the Oakville Crusaders. "He probably would be the best crosscountry runner that I've seen since I started coaching." -- Jon Kuiperij Oakville Minor Baseball Association Providing Quality Baseball in Our Community for over 44 Years 2008 Player Registration House League, Select and Rep Programs for all Boys & Girls Born 1983 - 2003 · Complete uniforms T-Ball through Junior · Players Development Clinics included in registration · Individual & Team Photos · Coaches Clinics taught by qualified instructors · All our Umpires are Baseball Ontario Certified CORRECTION NOTICE Due to manufacturer delays and printing errors we are issuing the following corrections on advertised products Fresh Cut Greenery including Trees, Wreaths, Garlands, Boughs and Urn Fillers will not be available until the end of November.
