Asked to explain her ability to make strong final kicks at the end of her races, Colleen Hennessy attributes it to years of... well... kicking. The St. Thomas Aquinas student made a late surge to win the junior girls' division at Saturday's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) cross-country meet in Niagara Falls, becoming the first Halton athlete to win OFSAA cross-country gold since Appleby College's Jessica Warren turned the trick in 1998. Hennessy trailed Whitby's Victoria Samyn in the final stretch of the four-kilometre race before blowing past her opponent in the last 100 metres, edging out Samyn by 1.7 seconds. "I was telling myself this was the end of the race and I had to push it. If I wanted to win, I had to go faster and catch her, no matter how hard it seemed," said Hennessy, who turned 15 Monday. "So, I just went faster." That ability to turn it on at the end is what Hennessy has become known for in local running circles. "She just came flying in. She has this huge kick," said Abbey Park running coach Greg Dailey. "It's unbelievable." Hennessy said she has developed her stamina over the years through her involvement in competitive Irish dancing. Those dances typically last around 90 seconds and feature rapid and constant leg movement. "You're always moving, it doesn't stop," said Hennessy. "You need a lot of stamina to do that. I've always done running to help me with my dancing." As much as dancing helped Hennessy develop as a runner, so did joining Athletiques International. After finishing second at last year's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) championships, Hennessy saw a pamphlet for the local running club and decided to join. "They've really helped me," said Hennessy, specifically crediting Athletiques coach Bruce Burton. "My style has improved a lot, and my endurance, and my speed. I learned I have to run on my toes instead of with my heels, and I have to use my arms more." Hennessy, who won each of the six high school meets she entered this season, also recognized the past or current assistance from St. Dominic's School teacher Debbie Hartmann and St. Thomas Aquinas coach Conrad Didiodato, as well as her parents, Patrick and Leasa Hennessy. · Abbey Park wins junior girls' team gold -- see page 32 HALTON'S OFSAA CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONS Year Name School Division 2007 Colleen Hennessy St. Thomas Aquinas junior girls 1998 Jessica Warren Appleby College junior girls 1988 Carolina Velson White Oaks senior girls 1987 Bob Donker Georgetown junior boys 1986 Missy McCleary Lester B.
