www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 7, 2007 - 9 MADD urges tying one on for safety Motorists are being urged to 'tie one on for safety' during the holiday season by the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Halton/Peel chapter. The local chapter launched its annual campaign Nov. 1. It is now urging residents to fly a red ribbon this holiday season and not drive if impaired by alcohol or drugs. The 2007 Project Red Ribbon campaign aims to raise public awareness of the unnecessary tragedies resulting from impaired driving. MADD Canada volunteers from across the country plan to distribute more than four million red ribbons throughout November and December. "Attaching a ribbon to your vehicle antenna or keychain will serve as a reminder to people on the roads to drive safe and sober this holiday season," said Renata Cvitkovic, Ontario Chapter Services Manager for MADD. "As well, it will give tribute to the many innocent victims who have lost their lives to alcohol and drug-related crashes," said Cvitkovic. She also urged motorists to make arrangements for a designated driver, call a cab and if they suspect an impaired driver, call 911. A Burlington OPP detachment spokesperson said traffic accidents cost money as well as lives. "On average, each and every day, four Canadians are killed and another 187 Canadians are injured in alcohol and drugrelated crashes," said Inspector Robin McElary-Downer. "The Burlington OPP applauds MADD Halton/Peel Region's efforts to stop impaired driving and to support victims of this violent crime," said McElary-Downer. A MADD Halton/Peel Region volunteer urged others to join the group's cause. "I volunteer because impaired driving remains Canada's number one criminal cause of death," said Lewis Tsai. "Impaired driving is not an accident," said Tsai For further information about MADD programs or the Red Ribbon campaign, call Cvitkovic at 905-829-8805, ext. 243 or email rcvitkovic@madd.ca or visit www.maddhalton.ca. OAKVILLE - Celebrating 150 years! NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT Falgarwood Creek Reach 54 Stabilization and Rehabilitation Project Class Environmental Assessment Study The Corporation of the Town of Oakville intends to undertake remedial work to address the problem of erosion and creek stability of Falgarwood Creek from the Morrison-Wedgewood Diversion Channel to Gainsborough Drive (see map). The study is being initiated to develop, evaluate and recommend preferred alternatives for the stabilization and rehabilitation of the creek channel and banks, along with possible flood/flow control improvements along Falgarwood Creek. The study will involve taking an inventory of the local physical and social environment to determine the nature of the problem. Once the problem is fully understood, a set of alternative solutions will be evaluated and presented to the public and to applicable agencies for comment. The Study is being carried out in accordance with the planning and design process for `Schedule B' projects as outlined in the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment document (June 2000). The Class EA process includes public/external agency consultation, and an evaluation of alternative solutions and alternative design concepts. Public input and comment are invited for incorporation into the planning and design of this project. This notice first issued October 24, 2007 NOTICE OF TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE Fourth Line between North Service Road & South Service / Wyecroft Road One-year period commencing November 10, 2007 To facilitate improvements to the QEW and the Fourth Line, the existing Fourth Line bridge will be demolished and replaced with a new bridge structure over the QEW. The new bridge will span a widened QEW and support an improved Fourth Line roadway. The bridge will be closed on November 10, 2007 for improvements and reopened again in late 2008. Advanced investigative work prior to the bridge closure and its demolition will take place during the week of November 5th to the 9th. The sidewalk will be closed during this period but the roadway will remain open with occasional lane closures occurring between 9am and 3pm. Traffic delays and congestion are to be expected. The new bridge will span a widened QEW, support an improved Fourth Line roadway, and incorporate pedestrian and cycling facilities, as well as additional lanes for traffic and transit. During the closure, the long-term detour route will be via the North Service Road, Wyecroft Road and Dorval Drive. While these roads will remain open, various lane closures will be required at intersections on North Service, South Service and Wyecroft roads to facilitate construction work and to control traffic flow. The existing Oakville Transit Bus Route 10 will also be affected. Please refer to www.oakvilletransit.com for schedule and service updates. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the construction, please contact the Ministry's Contract Administrator at (905) 825-0026. Questions or concerns can also be addressed by the Town's Engineering and Construction Department at (905) 845-6601 ext. 3302 or 3398.
