In my opinion, and I do not profess to be an expert in development matters or even what is the best for the Bronte community, I believe Mr. Brian Miller is misleading the public, by indicating that "most in Bronte are supportive (of the) Amica development." My opposition is a result of a number of issues. Issues that perhaps Brian Miller and those who support the development could address: 1. Currently there are three proposals for retirement homes in the Bronte Community, whereas a quick glance in the Yellow Pages has over twenty retirement homes currently within the area of Oakville and East Burlington, many with vacancies. 2. Lack of long-term care facilities in Oakville (Amica will only provide up to 45 minutes of care with activities of daily living). This does not appear to have been discussed with Amica. 3. Possibility of Heritage Designation of 144 Bronte Road and no plans to adapt this property into the development. 4. A committee was created by Amica and appears to neglect important stakeholders such as neighbours living within the block surrounding the proposed development. 5. No attempt to address concerns of neighbour directly to the north, Karen Birkemeyer. 6. Amica's proposed development is to be built on conservation lands. 7. Height of eight stories is another eyesore to our waterfront community. 8. Current site is not zoned for the density proposed. Let's hope for development that continues to respect the official plan and maintains the current zoning regulations. CONNIE DYKSTERHUIS I just read the letters to the editor (Oakville Beaver, Wednesday, Oct. 31) re: the CAS story from last week. I was so annoyed with that article that I was prompted to cancel my subscription. To publish such an article, which just seemed so selfserving (from the couple's perspective) and so unprofessional from the reporter's perspective. I just couldn't believe that couple. And then for The Beaver to put it as the cover story? Unbelievable. Thankfully it appears as though others shared my perspective. Mary Lohr and Maureen Novak, the individuals behind this week's letters to the editors, could not have expressed my points of view any better. PAT ST. JAMES CAS coverage warranted Please let me explain something for all those who wrote in to proclaim how upset and "horrified" they were with The Beaver for reporting about a family finding confidential CAS files. The Children's Aid Society is a powerful organization and The Beaver has every right to monitor that power under the principles of journalism. This was not just some wallet with money, or credit cards. We are talking about families' most dark and precious secrets, possibly regarding cases of abuse and neglect. This could very well be a neighbour or a friend. They are supposed to be kept in the strictest of confidence for these reasons. If these had been national security documents would you accept a simple `oopsy daisy' and just a "human error" attitude? Would it have been right for these files to have been returned simply without informing the public that this had occurred? People who hold these jobs are entrusted to protect the information in these files and someone dropped the ball. This is much deeper than simply returning a lost wallet. Quite often it is because of these exposed `leaks' which leads to changes in procedures about how confidential files are maintained when they are taken out of the office. Hopefully this incident will spark one of those changes and prevent other families from having their privacy compromised.
