He said Oakville is in a good position because of its close location to a major urban centre like Toronto, and also has its own assets, pointing to Sheridan College and its world-class animation program among them. "You look at the assets of Oakville ­ there's all kinds of potential," Murray said. "Very few communities have as much going for you as you do." And it's Baeker's job as the cultural strategist to come up with a way to utilize that to the best of the town's ability, and in a way its residents are on side with. What he stressed throughout his presentation is ensuring the community is involved, through initiatives like a cultural roundtable containing leadership groups to identify various ideas and opportunities. Baeker's first step is to identify a "community portrait" to determine where the town is now. He noted the plans completed in the past will not be discounted or repeated. "There's a lot of really valuable plans and strategies that have been done in Oakville," Baeker said, stressing these will be "consolidated" and worked into the cultural plan. Also involved in the planning process is a `where do we want to be,' component, and finally, `how do we get there' ­ the vision. "The most important piece," Baeker noted, "is ongoing implementation." Once pieces are in place, growth and development must continue, he said.
