www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 24, 2007 - 15 Putting the fun in cancer fundraising Continued from page 14 In the summer of 2006, Helena was feeling like she had the flu on a couple of occasions. By Halloween she was still sick. By mid-November she continued to be ill. By Dec. 6, after a battery of tests, she was admitted to hospital. Cancer had been discovered, but treatment options were outlined. At first the prognosis was hopeful, that with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, Helena would have a fighting chance. However Helena never came home again, said Dinda, explaining six days later, the cancer was found to have spread. On Dec. 13 Helena learned her condition was terminal and eight hours later she passed away in the early morning of Dec. 14. "The entire ordeal was shocking. Having young children, I had to explain what had happened to their Oma. With Christmas approaching in a week, how does one prepare for the funeral of your mother and at the same time Christmas for your children? With the help of family and friends, we made it through that very trying time," said Dinda. Dinda hopes her fundraiser can assist. "I'd like to help find a cure for this awful disease so no other person has to endure what we did as a family and the pain my mother suffered through. Cancer is such a horrible disease and the statistics are staggering as to how many people it affects. One in four will be afflicted with some form of cancer and just about everyone knows someone or has a family member who has been affected," said Dinda. The fundraiser however will be all about life and family fun -- and everyone is on board. While Dinda is donating all of her com- pany's services, her staff members are donating their time. Dinda has partnered up with Frootogo Orchards in Waterdown, which will host the event and many local businesses are getting involved donating supplies or silent auction items to help. All proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society. For information call Par-T-Perfect Oakville/Burlington/Milton at 905-510-5102.
