The Oakville resident was honoured at a banquet Thursday in Toronto for his work in developing and building single family homes, and for his contribution to the local community. The recognition, Gilgan said, was unexpected. "I was sincerely surprised," he said in a phone interview yesterday. "That, and I was incredibly impressed - more impressed with the number of other folks on the stage than I was with my accomplishments." Gilgan was honoured in the manufacturing category as the province's entrepreneur of the year. Other categories recognized included technology, media, health services and sciences. "It's encouraging to see the number of innovative, world leading things that are being done by people across our province," Gilgan said. And he's among that group. "Mr. Gilgan's foresight and professional skills have really built his business to the great success it Association (2007) and Ontario Homebuilder Association (2006) as well as specific awards such as Community of the Year and Project of the Year for Hawthorne Village in Milton. As a homebuilder and father of eight, Gilgan is committed to supporting charities that focus on families and children. He is the perennial co-host of the annual Mayor's Invitational Softball Tournament in support of the YMCA of Oakville and has directed Mattamy's support of the Children's Wish Foundation through a motorcycle Poker Run. In 2008, Gilgan will lead his third annual long distance bicycle ride in support of fundraising for the Sick Kids Hospital of Toronto. As Ontario's Entrepreneur Of The Year, Gilgan will compete with top entrepreneurs from the Pacific, Prairies, Québec and Atlantic regions for the honour of Canada's Entrepreneur Of The Year, to be announced Nov. 1. SALE accused of importing heroin An Oakville man was arrested at his home Thursday night following the seizure of approximately 100 grams of heroin by Canada Border Services Agency officers at the International Mail Centre in Mississauga. According to Sgt. Michele Paradis of the RCMP, the heroin had an estimated street value of $60,000. "Through shared information, gathered from numerous sources, law enforcement agencies are able to ensure that drugs can be seized before they reach our streets. This reduces the risk to our communities," stated Staff Sgt. Kevin Payne, in charge of the Hamilton-Niagara Regional Drug Enforcement Section. "The information that we received from Canada Border Services Agency led directly to the arrest." Clement Stephens, 42, of Oakville, is charged with heroin importation and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
