Manager Recognizing our youth Most of us probably know of at least one outstanding young person in Oakville. While most people appreciate a little recognition for their contributions, with our fast-paced lives and busy schedules unfortunately we can all be somewhat negligent in giving it. Young people in our community sometimes don't give their own efforts enough credit, preferring to remain in the background while contributing to bettering our town. However, a little recognition can go a long way in reinforcing the importance of bettering our community and helping to encourage young people to become life-long contributors to society. As Oakville's community newspaper, we are proud to be able to offer the 2007 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards recognizing the outstanding efforts and achievements of young people. Please help us by nominating a young person, aged 6-17, who is either involved in community service, has performed acts of heroism, is contributing to the community while living with limitations or is a good kid who shows a commitment to making life better for others, possibly doing things not expected of someone their age. Co-ordinated annually by the Ontario Community Newspaper Association and supported financially by TD Canada Trust, this program recognizes all young people nominated. Each nominee receives a certificate of recognition from their community newspaper. Up to 12 nominees and one group from across the province are then chosen as the final recipients to receive 2007 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards, during a special ceremony in the spring of 2008. Nominations will be accepted until Dec. 28, 2007. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Immediate neighbours of Amica development still upset I am quite disturbed by the story Amica developer reaches amicable agreement with neighbours, Oakville Beaver, Oct. 13. I attended and spoke at the meeting referred to in the column as did members of the ad hoc community representatives which "helped" design the proposal. However, not one of those who spoke could be called neighbours or to even speak for any neighbours. None of them are even from the neighbourhood. While there were neighbours, who attended and live on Bronte Road, I know from speaking with them that they are not in favour of the development. Furthermore the one neighbour who is immediately adjacent to the property to the north of the proposed development is not even mentioned in the article. She has retained a lawyer who spoke at the meeting expressing his client's many concerns with the development. The owner of the property Karen Birkemeyer spoke very strongly against the development. The fact that neither she or her lawyer were even mentioned in the article leaves the impression to all those reading the article, and especially the heading, that there has been an amicable agreement while in fact that is not true. Furthermore the article continues on page 7 and states Few dissenters still remain. This is again not a fact as there are many dissenters including Heritage Oakville which wishes to see 144 Bronte Road designated and remain on the site and be incorporated into the design. ANDY BRUCE Pud BY STEVE NEASE snease@haltonsearch.com Cyclist says thanks I would like to thank the good people who helped me, a cyclist, when I was the victim of a hit-and-run on Thursday, Oct. 11 on Cornwall Road. One man left his car to come to my aid, phoned 911 and directed traffic. From another car, a son jumped out to help me while his father drove off to try to find the car that hit me. The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and police responded quickly and gave great care. The emergency room staff at OakvilleTrafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) were wonderful.
