50 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 19, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com TOURNEY CHAMPS: Loyola's senior girls' basketball team won all three of its games at last weekend's St. Thomas Aquinas Fall Classic, including a 50-41 victory over Hamilton's Bishop Tonnis, to win the tournament championship. Senior Hawks step up game in Aquinas tournament final Coming up with possibly their best effort of the season, the Loyola Hawks defeated a tough Bishop Tonnos squad to win the championship at last weekend's St. Thomas Aquinas Fall Classic senior girls' basketball tournament. The Hawks, who carried an 11-3 overall mark into this week's action, downed their Hamilton opponents 50-41 in Saturday's final, much to the delight of coaches Gary Laurin and Chris Pauletto as well as a large group of parents, family and friends in the Aquinas gym. Tied 33-33 entering the fourth quarter, the Hawks stepped up their defence in the final 10 minutes, creating a number of fast-break opportunities. Once it gained its first sustained lead of the contest, Loyola worked both the perimeter and the clock with precision passing. Ashara Cadogan and Megan Hickingbottom sealed the win down the stretch, each making three free throws as Tonnos was forced to foul. Loyola had started the game slowly, unable to capitalize on a number of goodscoring opportunities, and found itself trailing 14-8 in the first quarter. The second quarter was a different story, however, as Alex Pecar made two long-range jumpers and added three timely steals to turn the game around. Cadogan's defence helped neutralize the abilities of Tonnos star Karly Roser, while Jenn O'Brien and Leah Franco battled for rebounds against Tonnos' 6-foot-3 post player Julia Barac. Franco finished the first half with five steal, and O'Brien scored the bulk of her 15 points in the second half. Pecar added 13 points, Cadogan finished with eight, Franco scored six and Hickingbottom netted four. Shannon Hayward, Mya Baluschak and Angelica Uremovich came off the bench to play some valuable minutes and give the Loyola starters the rest they needed for the fourth-quarter surge. Also contributing during the tournament were Ally O'Neill and Shannon Griffen. Loyola pounded Parkside 56-23 and Grimsby 46-18 in its earlier games. League basketball results In high school league action this week, the Hawks fell 47-42 to Holy Trinity in a showdown of Oakville's top Catholic senior teams. Pecar led all scorers with 22 points for Loyola, while Trinity was led by Doreen Bonsu's 17-point effort. Aquinas traveled to Nelson and dropped both ends of the senior-junior doubleheader. Emily Quinn scored seven points in the Raiders' 42-27 loss in the senior game, while Madeline Mann's 10 points weren't enough for Aquinas in a 45-24 junior defeat. Other scores involving local senior teams Wednesday included Iroquois Ridge downing Abbey Park 46-34, Ridge's third win in the past four games after an 0-3 start. The Eagles fell to 2-5. In Division 2 senior play Tuesday, King's Christian Collegiate was defeated 64-22 by the undefeated Burlington Central Trojans. Nikki Pilo scored 10 points for KCC, which fell to 2-6. The other senior Division 2 game from Tuesday involving Oakville teams saw T.A. Blakelock defeat White Oaks 2914. Local junior results from earlier this week included Iroquois Ridge defeating Abbey Park 35-25 and Holy Trinity downing Loyola 50-32 in Division 1 play, while White Oaks edged Blakelock 45-42 and KCC was doubled up 34-17 by Central in Division 2 action. Boys' volleyball Georgetown (7-0) continues to lead Division 1 senior boys' volleyball, but the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils aren't far behind. OT improved to 6-1 Monday with a 2-0 win over the Assumption Crusaders, but did not see action Wednesday. Iroquois Ridge swept Abbey Park 2-0, Loyola defeated Holy Trinity 2-0 and St. Thomas Aquinas got by Nelson 2-1 in Wednesday's Division 1 action. White Oaks is the top local team in senior Division 2 competition, owner of a 4-5 mark heading into yesterday's action. In junior play, Loyola (8-0) sits atop the Division 1 standings. OT and Abbey Park are 4-3. White Oaks is 7-2 and Blakelock is 6-2, good for third and fourth, respectively, in the Division 2 rankings. ONTARIO SPA DISTRIBUTORS 66% F OF LAST CHANCE TO SAVE!
