The date is exactly 202 years from the day of the famous Battle of Trafalgar in which Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets in the most significant naval battle of the Napoleonic Wars. In celebrating Trafalgar Day, the Bronte Historical Society pays homage to the origins of the name Bronte and other local place names in the life of the British Empire's most famous admiral. Visitors can enjoy hot apple cider or tea. Victory rum cake will be served in recognition of the Royal Navy's daily rum ration, sometimes referred to as "Nelson's blood." Darla McNevin will entertain with traditional folk songs and songs from the days of sail. She will repeat a short repertoire during the afternoon, beginning at 1:30 p.m. This is the last of the Art on the Bluffs series for the 2007 season. The exhibit rooms will close for the season on Oct. 24. Volunteers are at the house on Wednesdays year round. The Sovereign House is located at 7 West River St. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to maintain the house. For more information call 905-825-5552.
