Join Us xercise and regular physical movement may be a part of every day life for most of us, but it can present more of a challenge for some. That's why the Peter Gilgan Family Y introduced a new class to the Y this fall `Adults in Motion' (AIM). Adults in Motion is a land and water based exercise program designed to meet the needs of the older adult, or the adult with physical challenges who needs a more gentle program. YMCA trainer Susan Andrew explained that AIM is ideal for those with osteoporosis, arthritis or joint injuries, or back problems. "The pool is a great environment for exercise and the impact on joints is reduced which becomes more important as we age. Your heart rate is actually lowered when you exercise in the water, because the pressure of the water assists the heart in circulating the blood." Susan commented that it is never too late to start an exercise program, and `pumping iron' is really not what it's about. "You can use light weights and resistance bands to increase lost muscle strength and mass. That's why it is important to exercise on the land as well as in the water." AIM land exercises are often done using a chair for balance or sitting, and incorporate both strength and flexibility. Canadian research has shown that regular resistance training appears to reverse the signs of ageing in the muscles of older adults. So you get not just stronger muscles, but younger muscles too. Strength, balance and flexibility are not the only benefits of regular exercise. Regular physical activity can also reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of diabetes. So three times a week, the AIM group gets together at the YMCA of Oakville to learn, meet new friends, and put a spring back into their step.
