Halton District School board dignitaries, members of town council and future students gathered Wednesday at Postmaster Drive and Pine Glen Road, the site of a school that will be standing there and be ready to go when the bell rings for the first day of classes in September, 2008. "We're here today to acknowledge and celebrate the groundbreaking of a brand new school in the Oakville community," said Director of Education Wayne Joudrie. Elizabeth Hudson, currently the principal at E.J. James Public School, will take the reins as Hospital offloading delays continue to take up much of Halton paramedics' time, resulting in only one ambulance being available for the whole region on several occasions this year. The startling fact was presented to the Region's health and social services committee, Tuesday, in a staff report that provides an update on the situation brought to councillors' attention earlier this year. Paramedics must, therefore, continue providing care to the patient at the hospital, usually in the emergency department hallway, preventing the ambulance from leaving and being used for another emergency. The amount of time lost to offloading delays each day is equivalent to two ambulances being out of service for an entire 12-hour shift, the report from Halton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bob Nosal explained. Several members of the committee took issue with the vast amounts of time being lost due to crowded hospitals. "It should not be happening -- we need to correct this," said Regional Chair Gary Carr, noting things are See New page 11 See Delays page 7 End insurance confusion.
