THE FALL WAREHOUSE SALE AT ONTARIO'S LARGEST RETAILER BRAMPTON HARDWOOD FLOORS 59 Bramalea Road, Brampton he Oakville Public Library invites teens to participate in its third annual Write2Xpress writing contest. Simply submit an original short story based on your interpretation of any or all of the three photos in the promotional material (the Eiffel Tower, Venice and Stonehenge). The awards night is on Nov. 13 at the Glen Abbey Branch. Contest winners will be announced and all invited guests will have the opportunity to meet author, Marsha Skrypuch as she discusses her writing career and her new book, Prisoners in a Promised Land a depiction of one girl's experience at a Ukrainian internment camp in Quebec during World War I. Interestingly enough, Skrypuch didn't learn how to read until she repeated Grade 4. When she finally did learn to read, she chose the thickest book in the children's section of the Brantford Public Library: Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens. Reading Dickens was a turning point in her life: she became a reading fanatic and promised herself that she'd be a writer one day. Skrypuch began writing fiction in 1992, receiving well over 100 rejection slips, but she kept at it. In 1994, her picture book, Silver Threads, was accepted for publication and she's been writing ever since. Skrypuch is the author of many books for children, including Silver Threads and Enough as well as her young adult novels, Hope's War, The Hunger and Nobody's Child, which was nominated for the Red Maple Award, the Alberta Rocky Mountain Book Award, and the B.C. Stellar Award. Her chapter book, Aram's Choice, was nominated for the CLA Children's Book of the Year Award for 2007, as well as for the Silver Birch Express Award, 2007. Stories for the Write2Xpress contest may be submitted until Oct. 26. Entrants must reside in Oakville or attend an Oakville school in Grades 7 to 12. Entrants will have a chance to win one of nine certificates to Oakville Place Mall. All short stories must be the original creation of the person whose name appears on the Write2Xpress official entry form. A maximum of three short stories per entrant are permitted.
