If so, let your voice be heard at an all-party debate on Thursday, Oct. 4. The debate will take place in the auditorium of Oakville Public Library, 120 Navy St. from 6:30-8:45 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Sexual Continued from page 6 To put this in perspective, Operation Connection maintains about 12 media relations staff in Kandahar to manage public perception. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has only three staff in place to handle Canada's civilian aid work. On the surface, the military's propaganda effort would appear to be about drumming up support for a continued Afghan presence. However, the Afghan war is merely a pawn in a larger chess game. The ultimate goal is to change the way Canadians think about the military, thereby enabling a more militarized society and a heightened role for military combat in Canada's foreign relations. They seek to instill a warrior ethos by belittling our past as a peacekeep- ing nation while advocating an aggressive fighting force to stand shoulder to shoulder in combat with the Americans. This propaganda effort is reinforced by constant discussion about imminent terrorist threats. These are the means by which the military and the military arms manufacturers have successfully diverted funds away from environmental and social programs that Canadians favour. Irrespective of one's view of Canada's military and its future role, a functioning democracy requires that its citizens be informed by the most objective information possible. And in a democracy, it is the role of our military leaders to faithfully implement government policy, not to create it and not to advocate for it publicly.
