A local radio station that has been built up and nourished into Canada's top 50-plus broadcaster ­ and second across North America ­ with adult standards music format spanning everything from fifties crooners to folk, has been sold. "I'm a reluctant vendor," said Michael Caine, president and general manager of AM 740. The station was purchased by MZ Media on Tuesday for an undisclosed price. MZ Media Incorporated is headed by legendary Canadian television czar Moses Znaimer of MuchMusic and CITY-TV fame. Having left the world of television in 2003, Znaimer delved into radio last fall, purchasing CFMX Classical 96 in Toronto (and Classical 103 in Cobourg, Ontario) about a year ago from Trumar Communications ­ for $12 million. Recently, he quietly changed the call letters to CFMZ, thus naming the station after himself. The purchase of AM 740 was announced at a press conference held Tuesday afternoon in the lobby at the Classical 96 studio. "AM 740 was my baby and I wasn't looking to sell, but Moses was very persistent," said Caine.
