12 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 12, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Back to school means SMARTTM for Oakville Christian School Capture the excitement of new beginnings, the opportunity for a clean slate and time to embark on a brand new set of goals and therein lies the appeal of going back to school. For teachers and students alike, there is refreshment in refocusing and "starting over". At OCS, the outlook is especially bright. Over the summer, the school facility has been undergoing further renovations, with brand new windows installed in all classrooms throughout the building, and enhancements to hallway ceilings and lighting. The renovations are all part of the school's overall master plan to continually improve the building to meet the needs of present and future students. Under the leadership of newly appointed Principal, Jeff Kennedy, OCS is ready to start another successful academic year. Jeff brings over ten years of experience in Christian education and leadership, with a Master of Education in Organizational and Administrative Studies from Brock University, a Bachelor of Education from Queens University and a Bachelor of Kinesiology from McMaster University. Jeff's background in athletics leadership is likely to have the students keeping in shape in all areas of their lives. As an interdenominational Christian school, OCS is concerned about the whole student and providing a well-rounded education that meets the needs of students not only academically, but also socially, physically and spiritually in a Christ-centred environment. Around the classroom, SMART BoardTM is the new word for Grades 5 to 8. Over the past two years, the school has installed SMART BoardTM technology, the world's leading interactive whiteboard, in junior and intermediate classrooms. Combining digital projection with touch-sensitive screens, the SMART BoardTM allows teachers to bring a new dimension to their teaching, using online teaching resources and SMART BoardTM software. Today's digitally aware students respond very positively to these multimedia learning experiences, where they can participate interactively and have the opportunity to develop skills, such as presenting with PowerPoint, sharing ideas interactively with other students and reviewing digitally-saved lesson notes. This year, new and returning OCS students can expect to complete an interest inventory within the first few weeks to help their teachers get to know them, their individual talents and abilities, and their preferred learning styles. This is part of OCS' commitment to differentiated learning principles, reaching individual students where they are at developmentally and challenging them to grow and develop to meet their full potential. In practice, differentiation ensures that every student in every classroom can experience challenge and the feeling of success. With a record of past successes in regional and national competitions, and a recent Diamond Award in the Oakville Today's Readers' Choice Awards for Private Education in Oakville, OCS is setting the bar high for the 2007/8 year. Oakville Christian School's program exceeds the Ontario Ministry guidelines and provides strong academic and extracurricular programs in Athletics, Music, Art, Computer Technology and French. Participation in chapel, community service, business fair, science fair, math competitions and interest clubs provides students with multiple enriching learning experiences. Visit our website www.ocsonline.org for further information or contact Mr. Jeff Kennedy, Principal, 905-825-1247 ex. 223, to come in and visit. Openings are still available in some classes for September 2007. As a registered charity, the school is able to offer a tax donation receipt for partial fees and childcare receipts for kindergarten children, including before and after school supervision.
