www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 7, 2007 - 27 Having fun with Honoured The Travel Guy Continued from page 26 in various parts of the world. Each half-hour episode features six to eight activities. "It shows you how to have an active lifestyle when you go away," said Greco, who had recently returned from filming an episode in Rome. "For me, it's better than vegging on the beach all week. You've got to explore. These are all the little things that a first-time traveler might not read in the guidebook." The Travel Guy's motto says it all: "Know before you go." Greco, who worked in the TV commercial industry for years, came up with the concept for The Travel Guy years ago. He and his wife Julia both loved to travel, and wanted to somehow incorporate that love into a job. "I was watching Steve Irwin's show, Crocodile Hunter, and it was just so different and so unique, and it just mesmerized me," Greco said. "I had this idea for a travel show because I loved to travel, and after seeing his show I thought it might work." It's certainly taken off in Europe, Asia and Africa. Greco hopes that success will continue into North America some time in 2008. One of his favourite adven- tures so far was a trip to Belize, one Julia, part-time production director of the show, was able to take part in during time off her day job at TD Bank. "We got on this inner-tube and it guides you through this unbelievable cave system," Julia said. "You have those little miner lights on in the cave, and it's just amazing and so beautiful." While he may not enjoy museums, The Travel Guy does enjoy history and experiencing other cultures. "In Malta, the history that's there and the culture that you learn is just amazing," Greco said. "We visited this church where aristocrats were buried, so it was all about the history of the knights. "We try to bring that bit of history and culture on the show from our point of view." The Travel Guy also includes a segment on each destination's cuisine to "try and bring out a little bit of that part of the culture," Greco said. He goes a step further with some of the episodes, donning costumes depending on the travel destination. "In Canada, I dressed up as a Mountie, in Malta, I was a knight," said Greco, smiling. "We like to have fun with it."
