www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 29, 2007 - 3 Dreams of clean water are possible Continued from page 1 we can do a little bit more to help out than other countries." This water crisis, which affects more than one billion people worldwide, is particularly tragic because it is so preventable. The Blue Planet Run's donation site notes that a donation of $30 buys 500 bricks that can be used to line a well, while a large donation of $10,000 buys a village of 110 families a complete water system. The Blue Planet Runners also noted that because their sponsor, The Dow Chemical Company, has paid for the marathon in its entirety, 100 per cent of all donations made to water projects will go to water projects. At around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, that message-carrying journey reached Oakville with Laura Furtado of Brazil making the 10-mile run from the Petro Canada facility in Mississauga to the corner of Great Lakes Boulevard and Lakeshore Road where she handed off the baton to Simon Isaacs of Boston, who immediately took off on his 10 mile portion of yesterday's run. This was the 1,366th hand-off to take place during the marathon. Next stop, Stoney Creek. "The run started in New York and we went from New York to Boston and from there we went to Ireland, England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Belarus, Russia, Mongolia, China, Japan," said Furtado. "We landed in San Francisco, we crossed the United States and now we're here in DAVID LEA / OAKVILLE BEAVER WATER EVERYWHERE: Laura Furtado of Brazil, Dot Helling of Vermont, and Jason Loutitt of Trail, B.C. arrive in Oakville as part of the 2007 Blue Planet Run, an around the world relay that seeks to raise awareness and funds for safe drinking water projects. Canada and it's going to finish in New York again." The Blue Planet Run chose this route because these countries have the resources to help. To carry out this astounding task the runners have been broken into five teams with four teams running each day while the fifth team takes the day off. "We eat, run, travel and sleep and then we start over again," said Dot Helling of Vermont. "Right now we're on the 3 a.m.-9 a.m. shift. So, what we tend to do is we finish our run, we have breakfast and then we try to stay up because it's good if you can get to bed at 5 or 6 p.m. and sleep until 1 a.m., and then we get up and start the pattern over. We'll do this for four days. Our next shift is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. which is more normal." While running in the early hours of the morning may not be everyone's cup of tea, Furtado notes that it does have advantages. "Today I was running and I saw the sun rising up from the lake and there were the most amazing colours," she said. "In our trip we went through different places, lots of busy and crowded roads. We had a lot of bad and good experiences, but Canada, I think, is one of the best." The experience has also been a rewarding one for Loutitt who, even after seeing the splendor of Europe and Asia, still feels there's no place like home. "I'm back appreciating Canada more than I ever have before. It's unfortunate that sometimes you almost have to lose the things you like in order to realize how valuable they are and how much you cherish them," he said. "After travelling the world I am a thousand times more proud to be a Canadian." Yesterday was particularly special for Loutitt as, besides helping to bring the Blue Planet Run another 20 miles closer to completion, he married Taeko Terauchi, the Japanese representative on the Blue Planet Run team. "I got an hour and a half of sleep last night. I've been planning a wedding for two days, I'll be running 10-miles now, I'll be running 10 miles in another four hours and in between now and then I'll be getting a marriage licence and doing all these other things," said Loutitt. Besides having the pressing issues of life to deal with, the marathon also presented the additional challenges of adverse weather and swarms of hungry insects. "We've been pretty lucky. We had some violent rains down in Indiana and we had some storms in Russia but we missed some of the cataclysmic things that are going on around the world," said Helling.
