Research has shown that the playful approach of this club is extremely effective in getting more children to increase their reading skills. Last year, more than 4,000 kids read more than 27,000 books. As final recognition for their participation this year, children were congratulated with an invitation to a special party at one of the library's five branches. This year, comedic juggler, Craig Douglas entertained the children and their parents. The Summer Reading program would not be the success that it is without the community support that enables the library to hire literacy assistants at each branch. Literacy assistants engage and motivate children to maintain, develop and improve their reading skills. Not only do thousands of children benefit from this annual program, job opportunities are also provided to youth in the community. "Working at the library and organizing this program has been very fulfilling. It allows me the opportunity to take on a large responsibility and interact with children, parents, volunteers and other library staff on a daily basis," says Iroquois Ridge Branch Summer Literacy student, Patrick MolicardChartier. "This job also allows me to put my knowledge of Early Childhood Education to use since I am working with young children every day. The summer has been a success and the feedback has been tremendously supportive of our contributions, which makes every hour invested in preparation for this program worth it." Summer Reading programs can also have a profound impact on a child's confidence as a result of interaction with others during reading club activities. The following are just some of the comments parents had about this year's club: "It's a terrific program and has improved over the years. The Literacy Assistants have been very helpful.
