10 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 22, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Take Back the Night Sept. 11 The 17th edition of the annual Take Back the Night event in Oakville is being called Dare to Dream: ending Violence Through the Arts. It's taking place on Sept. 11 from 5-9 p.m. at T. A. Blakelock High School, 1160 Rebecca St. Organizers of the event are the Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Services of Halton (SAVIS) in partnership with the Halton District School Board, Halton Organization for Pride and Education (HOPE), Halton Regional Police Services, Halton Women's Place, Nina's Place and T. A. Blakelock High School. This year's Take Back the Night event will encourage people to "Say No" to violence against women. The 17th annual Take Back the Night will include an Anti-Violence Concert with: · Belly dancer Joharah, · Sarah Melody, a singer and Canadian spokesperson for Youth For Human Rights, · Sonay Gabroo Punjab De of the South Asian Bhangra Troupe, · Sofia Baig, a Montreal spoken word artist, · The Sound of Reason, Montreal's internationally-acclaimed musical duo, · The Oakville Steel Pan Band, · The Burlington Footnotes. Other activities will include an art exhibit, community bazaar, a women and children only anti-violence march, free snacks and face painting. Take Back the Night (TBTN) began in Germany in 1973, as a response to a series of sexual assaults, rapes and murders. TBTN events and marches are now held internationally in all parts of the world, and the message is the same: that women and children have a right to be free from violence in their lives.
