14 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 8, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Children embrace others across the globe Continued from page 13 a week and they stitch together clothes for themselves, their family and friends, as well as crafts and quilts. When the kids arrive with no project to work on or they finish early, they sew squares to make the charitable quilts. However, in the past year, students were driving the charity work. Now, Gilby has not just one or two quilts, but 20, to deliver to South Africa when she returns again this year to visit her parents and celebrate her dad's 75th birthday. "We have some really good kids who care about other children," said Gilby, whose husband is a principal in Golder, a global company specializing in ground engineering and environmental services. The firm organized a fundraising contest to celebrate the global nature of soccer during the World Cup and raised $8,000 for the Golder Trust for Orphans. "It was one big, wonderful circle with everybody helping everybody." Erica Gilby, Erica Gilby Sewing School It was that cheque that the Gilbys delivered last summer. In addition to financial support, Golder employees and associates offer WWW.NIGELCOMPUTERS.COM BURLINGTON'S BEST COMPUTER STORE! Walk in the Light (www.walkinthelight.org.z a) is a project supported by the company's trust fund and it focuses on the village of Hanniville, near Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. "During our visit John handed the cheque to this organization. This ministry is doing great work in a village of about 10,000 where every family has been affected by AIDS," said Gilby. Walk in the Light, a Christian charity administered by a man and wife team, sees children orphaned by AIDS, not sent to orphanages, but supported so that they may remain in their home village. If they're put in orphanages, they're turned out once they reach age 18 and are then not supported, explained Gilby. Walk in the Light supports families who take in the orphans and the families are held accountable for providing for the children, said Gilby, noting the system offers accountability and a chance for the children to grow up in their own village where they are known and loved. "This is a great effort in our community for those less fortunate than ourselves and the children have embraced this project and will continue to do so in the future. The Oakville Public Library (OPL) and Oakville Parent-Child Centre (OPCC) have partnered for many years in a shared goal to reach out to parents and children in the community. OPL has been facilitating story time sessions for new parents and infants at OPCC for several years and will continue this service in the fall. The OPCC will now be offering programs commencing in September at two Oakville Public Library branches. Mother Goose will run at Iroquois Ridge Branch on Mondays from 1-2 p.m. Registration is required through OPCC. Caregivers Corner will run at Woodside Branch on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The OPCC is the Ontario Early Years Centre for the Oakville community with four locations and many outreach programs in the community. Currently, OPL also provides in-house programming space for Halton Health Department Calling New Parents program and the Nobody's Perfect parenting program. "Our goal is to encourage Our Kids Network partners all those organizations in Oakville whose mission is to ensure that `All children thrive in Halton' -- to consider the benefits of using OPL locations; locations that might help them reach a larger community. We help them; they help us to deliver the programs/services/messages that will support Oakville kids, parents and caregivers," said Sharon Yates, Children's Advocate and Manager of the Iroquois Ridge branch. The library also worked with OPCC, the Ontario Early Years Centre in Milton and Burlington and other children's services agencies in Halton, to develop the Community Services Inventory (CSI), which is available through the Our Kids website. The database is maintained by Information Oakville, a OPL service, and contains information on services for children newborn to age 18 and their parents. Just under 80,000 records searches have been made to the database in the first six months of 2007. The database can be viewed at www.ourkidsnetwork.ca/csi/i ndex.shtml.
