28 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 3, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Art in the Park takes over Bronte Harbour Monday The Oakville Art Society (OAS) is holding its 42nd annual Art in the Park on the waterfront in Bronte on Monday, Aug. 6. It will feature more than 150 artists and artisans from across the country. Last year's edition of the event attracted thousands of people to the Bronte waterfront. Artists for this highly-competitive show were selected by a rigorous jury process. Every medium is represented, from traditional oil, acrylic and watercolour paintings to glass, ceramics, textiles, photography, mixed media, sculptures and fine jewelry. Art in the Park will be held at Heritage Waterfront Park, Bronte Road and Ontario Street. Admission costs $3 at the gate. For more information visit www.oakvilleartsociety.com. Oakville performers at Seniors' Jubilee A group of Oakville performers will be in the spotlight later this month for the 19th Annual RBC Seniors' Jubilee at Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall. The show will run from Aug. 1317, and features more than 1,300 performers in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. Among them are Oakville's Jim Bibby, the Kerr Street Big Band, Emerald Express, the Happy Tappers and Marylou Oliver. The daily `Jubilees' start at 11 a.m. with Lobby Entertainment a two-hour musical midway, where the audience can dance to live bands and sing along to choirs. At 1 p.m., the musical variety show begins, showcasing everything from ballroom to vaudeville, comedy to cabaret, tango to tap. Bibby, a native of Manchester, England, got his start in comedy performing in P.O.W. camps during the Second World War. He turned semi-professional in 1949, playing clubs throughout England until he moved to Toronto in 1957. The Kerr Street Big Band from the Oakville Seniors' Centre is a group of musicians that perform regularly, bringing their repertoire of familiar dance tunes to delight audiences of all ages. Emerald Express, under the direction of Shirley McConnell, will be putting on an Irish Dance show. Dancers for the 13-member group hail from Brampton, Burlington, Hamilton and Oakville. The Oakville Happy Tappers, formed in 1989, perform annually in the Jubilee and The Spectacular at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. The group won the senior category at the World Tap Dance Championships in Berlin, Germany, in 1999. Marylou Oliver and Sue Gurr form the musical group, The Intervals, and often entertain at charitable fundraisers in the area. The 19th Annual RBC Seniors' Jubilee will feature a different line-up of entertainment for each concert day, including singers, dancers, musicians, bands, comedians, magic and more.
