www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 28, 2007 - 3 STUDENT EXCELLENCE 2007 Halton District School Board honours Oakville students In May, the Halton District School Board held its 22nd annual Celebration of Student Excellence, a special evening that recognized one student from each of the board's 90 schools. The honoured students are representative of exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, self-improvement, community work, citizenship and leadership, or other specific criteria that reflects the school's unique priorities. Among the 90 students honoured were 31 from Oakville. This is the third and final in a series of pages in the Oakville Beaver Weekend edition honouring these students. Oakville Students honoured in the Halton District Catholic School Board's Sharing the Spirit Awards will follow next week. · Galen Wray, Grade 6, Pine Grove -- Pine Grove is pleased to have Galen as our representative at the Student Excellence celebration. Galen was selected because of her high academic achievement, positive attitude toward learning, kindness and caring. Galen is very involved in the school through demonstrating the Tribes Agreements, being involved in the school musical and leadership activities over a number of years. · Ryan Leslie, Grade 8, Post's Corners -- Ryan was selected because of his overall outstanding participation as a student in academics as well as activities in school and in the neighbourhood. Ryan is an honour student who has been Athletic Minister, a member of Student Council; a member of the cross-country, volleyball, basketball, track and field and football teams; a band member, playing trombone in Grade 7 and as a coach for the Grade 6 volleyball team. Ryan always displays a responsible and respectful attitude toward staff and students. · Mira Krunic, Grade 8 , River Oaks -- Mira is a dedicated student who inspires the best in her peers. She is selfless, cheerful, caring, always sets incredibly high standards for herself and always succeeds in meeting them. She is a model of organization and an active leader in academics and the community. Mira is a highly respected member of the River Oaks Leadership Council and works well in any situation. · Ben Fuller, Grade 5, Sheridan -- Ben demonstrates a strong interest in learning, leadership and citizenship through his assistance with young and disabled students. He participates in available co-curricular activities at the school, gets along well with staff and students and is consistently respectful to everyone in the school community. · Laura Tencer, Grade 6, Sunningdale -- Laura is an exceptional contributor to a class learning environment, providing acacurricular and community activities. She is the editor of the school paper, World Council President, Athletic Council executive member, President of the Ski Club, student mentor, tutor and member of various athletic teams. Outside of school, Julie is a founding member of Teens Organizing Local Events for Seniors (T.O.L.E.S), is part of Canadian Connections, author of a book titled, Killbear, Thanks for the Memories, with all profits generated for Killbear Provincial Park and works as a lifeguard for the physically disabled. · Courtney Meilleur, Grad 11, A b b e y Park High School-- Courtney has maintained academic excellence throughout her high school career. She has matured from a shy grade nine student into a young lady who pursues her interests such as traveling and wrestling. · Shannon Meilleur, Grade 11 Abbey Park High School --Shannon excels in her academic pursuits. She loves to travel to increase her knowledge of the world around her. Shannon is a terrific public speaker and has become an amazing debater. · Adam Mitchell, Grade 12, Iroquois Ridge High School -- Adam has made incredible contributions to the culture of the school and the community, being the driving force behind many successful fundraisers, events and partnerships. He empowers young people to develop and realize their strengths, abilities and passions, while motivating them to make a difference in the lives of others. Adam is most deserving of this prestigious award. · Heather Johnson, Grade 12, Oakville Trafalgar -- Heather is an exceptional student who has made a significant contribution to co-curricular life at Oakville Trafalgar. An interest in the welfare of others has been the impetus for her dedicated work on the Wellness Council, taking on the responsibility of Co-President this year. Heather has also participated in band activities, School Reach and has stood out as a very positive school citizen. · Jared Mikkelsen, Grade 12, White Oaks -- Jared is an outstanding academic student who has been a member of the Honour Society maintaining an average in the mid 90's each year. He has been a member of the Math Society, School Reach, Chess Club, WOSS Ski Race Team, Bathtub Race, Junior Band and the France Exchange Program. Outside of school, Jared has been involved in Oakville Minor Hockey, the Burloak Canoe Club, DaVinci Engineering Enrichment Program, Utarpa Grace Lutheran Youth Group and volunteer initiatives.
