www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 27, 2007 - 5 Swimming for the Cure Tomorrow (Saturday), 18 people will enter the water to complete the seventh annual Swim for the Cure; an endurance swim on the picturesque Severn River (90 minutes north of Toronto off Hwy. 400). They will not only be helping to prevent their own diagnosis of breast cancer, but will bring hope through their efforts to the 22,300 women who will receive a diagnosis of breast cancer in Canada this year. Event organizer and swimmer Debbie Bang knows first hand about the devastation of breast cancer. She lost her aunt Teri in May after a valiant 12-year fight with breast cancer. The Canadian Breast Cancer Research Initiative has identified that women who are active throughout their lives cut their risk of developing breast cancer by 42 per cent and it is never too late to become active. This weekend's swim begins at Swift Rapids, Lock 43 and ends at Big Chute Lock 44. It's eight miles or 12.8 kilometres. The first swimmers into the water will be jumping in at 6:30 a.m. and should finish five to nine hours later, depending on the weather. The event has raised more than $60,000 in the last six years.
