www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 27, 2007 - 17 Removing front tire is a good defence Continued from page 9 Other postings on Kazzio, as recent as last week, tell similar tales. One message, posted July 20, appeals to the thief of a boy's bike, that was stolen off a front lawn in the Glen Abbey area, to return it with no questions asked. "It's an issue everywhere this time of year, but we've seen a lot of bike theft this year in Oakville," said Halton Detective Sergeant Greg Sullivan. The motivation for bike theft, he says, ranges from financial to a thief's unwillingness to walk a long way. "Many of them are just stolen purely for transportation to get from point A to point B and they're dumped," said Sullivan. "There are some very expensive bikes out there, racing bikes and, in fact, there was a report today of a $4,000 bicycle stolen from a garage. That might be resold just because it does have such a high-dollar value." The opportunity for a thief to strike only increases with the warm weather as people open up garages and sheds to more frequent use. "We're getting a lot of garage entries right now. People are leaving their garages open, the garages are being entered and bikes are one of the chief things that are being stolen," said Sullivan. "This group is looking at higherend bikes, so chances are they're being resold." In addition to catching the thieves, police face a challenge in returning recovered bikes. "Most people don't have the serial numbers for the bikes that are stolen so we can't match it up here and quite often people don't bother coming down to the police station and viewing the bikes that were recovered," said Sullivan. Sullivan urges all bike owners to write down their bike's serial number. "If your bike has been stolen and you report it and provide the serial number your chances of getting it back are much much higher," he said. Even if an owner does not have the serial number, Sullivan still recommends people examine the recovered bikes at the police station. "People can come down and take a look and sometimes there will be a personal identifier on it so people can say for sure it's their bike," he said. Sullivan recommends that homeowners start locking their garages. However, for people who are out and about Sullivan acknowledges that no defence will be adequate. "If someone really wants your bike and they have the tools to take it, then they're probably going to." Bike owners can make their bikes less tempting targets by removing the front tire and taking it with them. "What thieves like about bikes is they can jump on them and be gone in minutes. It's a type of theft that allows for a speedy getaway, and if you put obstacles in front of that it decreases the chance that they're going to take your bike."
