www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 27, 2007 - 13 Apparent teen prank no joking matter Continued from page 1 In the most recent incident, which took place in the late afternoon of July 24, a family was startled by two loud explosions coming from their rear deck. When police investigated, they found the remains of a 500ml water bottle that had been thrown at the family's home. The explosion occurred due to a chemical reaction inside the bottle. Police also report that three youths, between the ages of 14-16, were seen running from the rear of the family's yard. "What it looks like is a group of young people are randomly picking houses to throw these things at," said Halton Detective Sergeant Greg Sullivan. "They're not thinking about what they're doing and they don't seem to understand that this is very dangerous." As chlorine is the chief ingredient in the explosive cocktail there is no limit to the potential damage they can cause given the right circumstances. "If they throw one of these bombs through a window or a door they could start a fire," said Sullivan. "If someone is in an enclosed space when one of these explodes there could also be very serious consequences to their health that comes from breathing in a large amount of chlorine." Those responsible don't have to be science majors to construct chlorine bombs as any interested party can get the instructions to build one from a variety of Internet sites. The popular video-sharing website YouTube has a number videos showing individuals nearly blowing off their fingers while playing with chlorine bombs. In one clip, a teenager actually holds an activated chlorine bomb up to his face to see if the reaction is taking place moments before it explodes. "We have had cases where these bombs have exploded while kids were trying to make them," said Sullivan. "They are dangerous," he stressed. So far, the damage done by these homemade bombs in Oakville has been relatively minor with some of the people present during the explosions reporting irritated eyes and throats from the chlorine in the air. However, police said the next time it happens it could be much worse as anyone in the immediate vicinity of a chlorine bomb detonation could receive severe chemical burns. "... if a child or anyone else gets too close to one of these things when they go off there could be some serious injuries," said Sullivan. The young people seen running from the scene of the chlorine bomb explosion on July 24 are described as East Indian with medium builds. One suspect was wearing a black baseball cap, a shirt with blue-and-white horizontal stripes and baggy shorts. A second suspect had on a yellow-and-brown stripped shirt. Anyone with information about this or any other police matter is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Halton at 1-800222-TIPS (8477). SUMMER SALE CONTINUES HALF PRICE Idalle NOW $ 49 REG.
