www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 25, 2007 - 5 Rain fails to dampen Tory barbecue By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A heavy downpour was not enough to stop Progressive Conservative leader John Tory and Oakville Conservative candidate Rick Byers from attending an Oakville Community Leader's reception on Thursday. As the rain fell the two Conservative contenders circulated among the leaders of Oakville's government, chamber of commerce and residents' associations to name a few, as they gathered under a white tent in the backyard of a Linbrook Road residence. "We're thrilled that so many of the people who make this community tick were able to come out this afternoon and meet John and I," said Byers, during the formal part of what was an otherwise casual barbecue. "The purpose of this meeting and reception is so we can meet you, hear DAVID LEA / OAKVILLE BEAVER TUNED IN: Oakville Conservative candidate Rick Byers and Ontario Progressive Conservative Party Leader John Tory listening to the concerns of local people at a meet-and-greet barbecue. what's on your minds and talk about the issues in our great community of Oakville." Although the event was described as a nonpartisan meet-andgreet, Tory did take the opportunity to briefly address the crowd about what he believes makes a good public official. "I don't think people expect those in public life to deliver perfection. I don't think they expect us to deliver miraculous answers to complex problems. I think they expect pretty basic things. They want honesty, they want competence and they want fairness," said Tory. "Honesty really just falls largely under the heading of just telling people what you are going to do, you're straight with them. You do what you said you were going to do and, when there are problems, you're straight with people as well." Tory used his backing of nuclear power, despite the stigma it has, as an example of where honesty in politics is important.
