The Angels won five straight games, allowing only three runs, to claim the championship of last weekend's Oakville Angels Summer Classic fastpitch tournament. The Angels defeated Stratford 5-0 in the final, posting their third shutout of the tournament. Angels assistant coach Dan Lyttle said the team has been stingy all season, allowing more than four runs in a game a mere four times in 67 games. "The pitching has been strong, but it's really overall defence," Lyttle said. "Once the other team gets a hit, they really have to earn the run." Few teams could do that on the weekend. Brittany Parkes pitched a shutout as Oakville squeaked out a 1-0 victory over Halton Hills Friday night. The Angels followed that up with a 5-2 victory over Guelph B and then won their third straight by downing Guelph M 5-1. The Angels then met Stratford, which also entered the final game with a perfect 3-0 record. However, the Angels bats exploded for 12 runs in three innings to bring the game to an early end, due to the mercy rule. Meanwhile, Alex Sagl pitched the team's second shutout of the tournament. Sagl continued to baffle Stratford batters in Sunday's final as she fired another shutout and again got plenty of offensive support. "The bats really came alive, especially in that (first) Stratford game," Lyttle said. "It seems to be a different kid that steps up every time." The Angels will hope to continue their hot streak when they play at the provincial championships at the end of the month in Guelph. The top three teams at provincials will advance to the nationals in Winnipeg. The Angels have an overall record of 55-12, but have lost just four games against Ontario teams this season. They currently are tied for first place with Brampton in the Peel Halton Fastpitch League, with only one loss. Other members of the Angels' championship team are Taylor Brown, Nova Bozinoski, Lauren Goacher, Lauren Lyttle, Jocelyn Carabott, Nicole Cerpnjak, Jennifer Wilcox, Hilary Dawe and Stephanie Birtles. The team is coached by Barry Brown, Mark Goacher and Lyttle. Squirts win bronze The Angels squirt team defeated Halton Hills 10-4 Sunday to win the bronze medal. Oakville finished first in the division by winning two of three games. The Angels opened with a 10-3 victory over Halton Hills before falling 5-3 to Newmarket. Oakville bounced back to edge Jordan 10-9. Oakville then met Brampton in the semifinals, falling 9-3. Novice II team eliminated early The novice II Angels were blanked 6-0 by Brampton C in their opening game and tied Barrie 3-3 in their next contest, allowing them to finish second in their division. The Angels began the double-knockout portion of the tournament with a 10-7 win over Napanee. Brampton then edged Oakville 3-1 and the Angels were eliminated after falling 7-3 to Enniskillen.
