www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 20, 2007 - 9 Armed gunmen terrorize family during home invasion By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Residents of a home on Oakville's Garden Drive received a terrifying awakening early Monday morning as five gun-wielding men forced their way into the residence and robbed them. Police say the men, who are believed to be in their late teens or early 20s, were armed with a variety of firearms, including a sawed-off shotgun, which they used to extort the victim's co-operation. "At gunpoint they demanded money and some other items," said Halton Detective Sergeant Greg Sullivan. "We believe they took off with some money and some electronics." A man, a woman and a nine-year-old girl, who were in the house when the home invasion took place, were not harmed. In an unusual turn of events, several of the gun-touting suspects are described as having potatoes on the barrels of their weapons. While this may seem humorous, police note the potato has a much darker purpose. "There is a fallacy among many people that potatoes can be used as silencers, that if you put them on the end of a revolver they will silence the bullet leaving it," said Sullivan. "That myth has come from a movie or something, but it's certainly not the case. All you do is make a mess." With so many suspects involved, police are not ruling out the possibility that the home invasion was gang related and are looking at the group in relation to crimes committed in another region. "We are looking at a similar incident that occurred recently that may or may not be the same people," said Sullivan. The suspects are described as having olive complexions and may be of South American decent. The suspect carrying the sawed-off shotgun was wearing a gold New York baseball cap and baggy jeans. A second suspect had short brown hair with a chin-strap beard and a goatee. They were seen leaving the area in a silver four-door sedan, possibly a Mercedes Benz. Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (1800-222-8477).
